I still think Into Darkness was a better Trek movie than many fans gave it credit for, and let's face it, TROS was the best we were ever going to get given the behind the scenes chaos at Lucasfilm.
That doesn't really make sense. As I understand it, the idea of a reboot with a younger cast had been around for a while already. The alternate timeline was mostly so that the canon rivet-counters wouldn't immediately reject it.
I haven't had much desire to revisit it recently myself but it did accomplish what it set out to do; it got a lot of people interested in Star Trek again, myself included, and it proved to the powers that be that it was still viable.
Overall I liked it but I found it to be pretty inconsistent. It feels like an experimental series, trying to figure out the right approach for modern day Star Trek. When it was good it was up there with the best of any of the other series. When it was bad it was at least bad in an interesting...

I keep hearing that. I still plan to watch it anyway, I've enjoyed most new Trek and I think I can forgive them...
