I haven't had much desire to revisit it recently myself but it did accomplish what it set out to do; it got a lot of people interested in Star Trek again, myself included, and it proved to the powers that be that it was still viable.

That's my point really, if you chase away everyone but the hardcore fans, you'll eventually chase those away too.

They ruined Star Trek by making the first pilot rather than letting it remain a figment of Gene Roddenberry's imagination forever.

It's that phenomenon where the perceived audience reaction and the actual audience reaction are two totally separate things.
