The best of times, the worst of times.
"Despite Yourself" does have some incredible highpoints. Burnham's speech to Tilly right before she's going to impersonate Killy is exceptional, possibly one of my favorite bits from the entire series of Discovery. And then her actual playacting as Killy...
Personally I don't mind Armin's nitpicking, even when it's wrong, because he has a sense of humor about it. The others are always teasing him over it, and he pokes fun at himself as well. For me the self-awareness takes it from potentially annoying to endearing.
Weeks later, I am still stunned...
The weirdest thing about Disco season 1 is how many glimmers of greatness are strewn about through it. Every episode has something great about it. Every episode also has something terrible about it. I struggle to think of a more erratic season of television.
It always makes me think of the TV...
"The War Without, The War Within" is the dud of the season for me. Such a tortured episode. They're trying so hard to bring this unwieldy narrative in for a landing, and this is just the grinding gears of plot contrivances forcing everyone into where they need to be for the finale. Just awful...
I also like that we now have both halves of "In A Mirror, Darkly" on the winner board. Part I was the 2019 champion. I don't think we have any other two-parters where each part has taken the prize.
I will off "Regeneration" and make "In A Mirror, Darkly, Part II' the winner.
"Regeneration" is so good but it just cheats A LITTLE too much. Like, a hair. I can't really accept the Borg skipping "we are the Borg" in their usual intro as the fix to preserve continuity. And also Phlox's...
I will off "Twilight" (it's kind of a downer, though I am impressed with its singular achievement of getting the captain shirtless on the bridge)
I'll give my vote for the next round to "In A Mirror, Darkly, Part I", since these are all kind of at tie level, but I know I like Part II better...
"Breaking The Ice" again
Breaking the Ice - 1
Regeneration - 0
Cease Fire - 0
The Council - 0
Twilight - 0
In a Mirror, Darkly, Part I - 0
In a Mirror, Darkly, Part II - 0
Probably "Breaking The Ice" is the least of these for me. The others are all simply more memorable.

Taking out "United." Really nothing bad to say about it, I just prefer the earlier piece of that arc and the MU two-parter.

Geez, for me that Augments trilogy is the clear highlight of the season, by like eleventy billion miles.
It is so far ahead, it can't even see the rest of season 4 from where it is.
Ah well! I'll put a bullet in "Kir'Shara." For me the Vulcan trilogy is defined by feeling suffocated by those...
I cannot get with that view that "Terra Prime" actually makes a good finale. Ending on Trip & T'Pol crying over a dead baby? That's as bad as TATV.

"Storm Front, Part I" is intolerable. This whole Nazi tangent was so ill-advised.

I'll eliminate "Damage." We have finally reached the point where I actually like what remains! But I'd just be more excited to watch the other two. "Twilight" I will always love for it's insane opening, and also the rest of the episode is good too. "The Council" was this moment of "maybe this IS...
Generally speaking, I think the Xindi arc has a terrible opening act and a terrible final act, and all the highlights come from the middle section of the season (and most of those have already been removed).
So, I'll hack off "Countdown." I already eliminated the actual finale and this is...
I know people love it, but "Azati Prime" pisses me off. It gets all of its impact from building to this big, cataclysmic, NO ESCAPE cliffhanger... which the follow-up episode then just "nopes" out of. All of this episodes power comes from the fact that it cheats.
Any hack can write an...
