    Discovery starship discussion [SPOILERS]

Not much to discuss here starship wise. The yacht was a perfectly decent oddity. Stella and her dad were straight from William Ware Theiss's drawing board, which was cool. And that Andorian space helmet is really enough for me to validate this whole series. I briefly had hope the time crystal...

    Discovery starship discussion [SPOILERS]

    * I took it to mean the Constitutions are the top of the line frontier Starships where experience counts double. * Strange we never saw Cronwell's cruiser. But not showing stuff is one of the best things Star Trek can do, since our imaginations are always so much more intersting than generic...

    Discovery starship discussion [SPOILERS]

I watched "The Tholian Web" last night... It felt strangely relevant to everything going on in Discovery. People turning angry (not evil.. just.. angry, which by TOS Starfleet standards is already very dangerous apparently) by being in the presence of "weird space". It's amazing how ENT...

    Discovery starship discussion [SPOILERS]

I kind of like the "new" holographic technology. Especially when Burnham said "Computer, mirror off" and her mirror-hologram disappeared. I guess this means we just never caught any of the Enterprise crew using their holographic mirrors or viewscreens but invisibly, the tech was there, or has...

    Discovery starship discussion [SPOILERS]

I really missed these discussions by the way ;) Isn't first officer sort of a secondary position in TOS? Spock is Science Officer and First Officer. Number One was navigator/ops and First Officer. This is different from Riker and Chakotay, who were apparently fulltime XOs. Speaking of Number...

    Discovery starship discussion [SPOILERS]

I'm guessing they will fill the role of "generic Starfleet fleet" again. The real question of course, will we see the USS Constitution or one of its sister ships ever turn up. We can contrive reasons why a non-Enterprise Constitution class might concievably have a more DSC-like interior (I mean...

    Discovery starship discussion [SPOILERS]

Well, what the warp field looks is probably influenced by things like cochrane/chi factor/warplanes, local subspace properties, the shape of the warp field, the tuning of the warp "pulses", and all sorts of technical details like that. There was a map of the Jefferies tubes right next to the...

    Discovery starship discussion [SPOILERS]

I think the "cupola" style bridge on the bottom of the saucer was a pretty cool idea. But then I also think bridge windows are probably the coolest thing this new era of Star Trek has introduced. I just wish they would have thought of some window shutters to also make it possibly to fly with...

    Discovery starship discussion [SPOILERS]

Maybe in season 2 they will put a roof over it make some amazing garden plazas in the primary hull.

    Discovery starship discussion [SPOILERS]

Are we even going to bother explaining the gaps in the saucer? I love the McQuarrie design in all its brutalist ugliness, why did they have to give it random "cool" gaps in the saucer. Other ships have perfectly fine saucers, so its too late to play the "but we had spheres and saucers are new"...

    Discovery starship discussion [SPOILERS]

Hey Timo, good to see you're still around ;) No offense to the artist, but the Shenzhou is very definitely a John Eaves design, a lot of his ships work for any century between the 22nd and the 30th. That means that purely design-wise, we can't really say which is older. I'm also not convinced...

    Discovery starship discussion [SPOILERS]

Yeah, I noticed those naughty Movie/TNG era markings! And are those impulse engine nacelles? Or is Europa a 4-nacelle ship? I think the "ugly" box+saucer is actually my favorite of the lot. Strangely reminds of some of the old Spaceflight Chronology shapes.

I think I know what the "unexplored event" is going to be.

How about the http://memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Battle_of_Axanar? It's a big thing, it has something to do with Vulcans or maybe Spock in particular, and therefore with Burnham.

NCC-1701 USS Enterprise Deck by Deck - WIP

As an aside, there really should be some effort to restore the IDIC page's contents. So much good stuff has been lost there :(

    Matt Jefferies original shuttle design

This is pretty cool. Apart from "will that even fit through doors!?", it's a really nice design that would've been impossible to build on TOS's budget, but would look totally at place. Would've loved to have seen this in the Animated Series, for example. Just to build on some earlier comments...

The full version of Ares IV?

If you want to stay close to real world-ish designs, and Sternbach's work, perhaps something like http://www.spacemodelsystems.com/spckits.html I personally like to believe it would've been something resembling the DY-100 class, just to create some kind of continuity. Basically, take this Mars...

Why are communicators and tricorders separate?

I think there must be some kind of cultural reason behind many of the apparent 'low tech' solutions we see in the shows. I think that there is a cultural drive towards doing things manually and personally. That's why we don't see AIs in regular service, advanced robotics, virtual beings etc...

Star Trek TOS Miniatures -- Where Are They Now?

Hmm.. I had always understood that the 3-footer was at least built as a prototype, but the big 11-footer wasn't finished in time, and they shot the smaller model. I could very well be wrong, of course. The 3-footer is also the one showing up in "Requiem for Methuselah", right? What happened to...

    Never seen TOS scenes...again....

It's strange to see Spock out of his blue uniform. Spock would really need McCoy at his side as Captain, as we already saw in "Galileo Seven". Given enough time, Spock would probably have made a fine captain, but he would've definitely needed to learn how to deal with the crew's (and his own)...
