Should the Borg be the villain in Trek 3?

True. It's no wonder why people are turning to fast food in droves and running like hell from a good diet. Damn you, JJ, it's your fault obesity is rising all over America and Europe. Weren't you told to put the Crunchy Frog between any two meals like we used to do in the good old days?

Data: "I believe I speak for everyone here when I say...to Hell with the Borg."

Spock: "If I were human, I believe my response would be 'To Hell with the Borg.' If I were human."

See? Even Star Trek icons hate the idea.

Honestly, I never liked the Borg in any iteration.

Oh, I know what I want, a shout out to the animated series. Give me a giant Spock or Quetzalcoatl. Or the alien who looked like Satan. Yeah, baby.

Spock began experimenting with colourful "hell" metaphors back in TVH, so there's only one thing I can say...

Borg whales.
You know you want it.

Now, if we really are getting a reboot TNG then I'd be more likely to say save the Borg for them.

If they have the right story, they should go for it. Why save the Borg for a tomorrow that may never come?

The problem is that if TOS starts using the heavy hitters of TNG instead of its own, there won't be much for a TNG reboot to play with for their own films.
It's a massive stretch at this point to assume that a TNG reboot will ever happen, so it makes no sense to restrict your story possibilities to "save it for the TNG reboot."

Besides, it would make a certain amount of sense to plot the TNG reboot literally a generation after Kirk's time -- say, if Picard actually answers to Admiral Kirk in the chain of command -- which case the Borg would be a persistent threat that continues to threaten the Federation, not a blast from the past that is was mysteriously dormant for a hundred years.:rommie:

If I ever actually wanted to see the Borg ever again.

Actually, I'd say there's a pretty good chance. IDW is doing a story in the comics in which Q transports the Enterprise to the Abramsverse's 24th century where they meet the DS9 crew. Perhaps the reason they're showing us an Abramsverse take on DS9 in the comic as opposed to TNG is because Bad Robot has plans for an Abramsverse TNG?

yes indeed - maybe in the new film even? (see last point in OP)

I think there is maybe a 30-40% chance they will make a TNG reboot in the next 10-15 years. And I think that is reasonably generous.

How about no villain?

An antagonist or conflict, of course. I am so tired of villains. "Muwahaha, I am mad and want vengeance."

Ah, no. I don't think the Borg should be the next villain in Star Trek 13 (sick of this '3' stuff). I think it's a bad idea to keep trying to shoehorn in aspects of Trek that shouldn't be encountered for so many years. What I want is for the next film to try and be somewhat close to the spirit of the franchise again, and to be somewhat original.

If they have to use older elements, why not something that's more in TOS' boundaries (like the Mirror Universe, or the M5 computer)?

I'd love a Mirror Universe story in the movies, but I know they already did that in the comic, and my understanding was they were allowed to do it because there was no intention of using the MU in the movies.

Exactly, every storyline used in the comics is signed off and approved by Orci himself before it gets written. Anything you see in the comics, you won't see in the movies.

Which makes it rather odd the Gary Mitchell rumour for STID persisted as long as it did, given that was the very first story done in the comics. Either people don't trust Orci to mean what he said, or they consider Karl Urban to be quite the authority and automatically assume he speaks the truth.

But based on the comics, we won't see in the movies a Klingon war, Q, DS9, Mirror Universe, Vulcans seeking revenge against Romulans, origin stories for Cupcake or Keenser, or remakes of Where No Man Has Gone Before, The Galileo Seven, Operation: Annihilate, Return of the Archons, The Trouble with Tribbles, The Apple, or Amok Time.

We've had a lot of traditional villains in the movies - I agree, maybe a break is needed. Instead of a villain, make it a "Thing".

Doomsday Machine??
