NFL Offseason '14: Wake me up when minicamps start

So the Raiders drive a truckload of money up to Rodger Saffold's house..

Good luck getting a full season out of him.

What I meant to say was, he's an excellent lineman who will contribute greatly to any team lucky enough to sign him....

:vulcan:

Charlie Whitehurst to the Titans, two years for up to $8 million. How the hell does this guy keep getting paid, and paid highly?

Jason Hatcher to Washington. So just to clarify, the worst defense in the NFL just lost DeMarcus Ware and and their 11 sack pro bowler Jason Hatcher. Next year is going to be awesome.

...and apparantly Anthony Spencer is visiting Washington today. Not only are we going from bad to humiliating on defense, we are supplying our division rival with what decent defensive players we did have. I'm going to be a Broncos fan next year.

The news that Brandon Weeden was cut reminded me of a conversation from a few years ago...

The senior bowl was an off day for Weeden. He's not Weinke. He'll be fine.

Saving this post for when he's out of the league in four years. :p

Knocks on Weeden:

Has injury history including his fucking shoulder.

Is old.

Only started two seasons.

Played in gimmick offense in gimmick conference.

Is going to a terrible shithouse team.

:p

I guess it only took two years.

Good night, sweet prince, and thank you for the greatest highlight of your career:

Julius Peppers signs a 3 year deal with Green Bay.

The Bears resign Charles Tillman to a 1 year deal.

I love Tillman, but the Bears need players that can tackle & cover more than they need fumble specialists. And that's only if Peanut can stay healthy.

I'm happy about the Packers signing Peppers. His best years are probably behind him, but it's still a boost to the Packer's D.

I don't think there's any question that his best years are behind him -- he's in his mid-30s, and his performance last season raised serious questions about whether he has any tread left on the tires. I don't think he's completely toast yet, but he's definitely on the decline.

It's a low-risk / medium-reward proposition, but I'm not necessarily convinced that Capers has the wherewithal to actually use him effectively. Peppers is too light to play defensive end in a 3 - 4, so at first blush they either have to stick him at OLB or run a 4-3 under that wastes Raji.

The Cowboys have signed Brandon Weeden to a two year deal. THIS IS YOUR FAULT SOMEHOW TIMBY!

He isn't a high-upside guy who just didn't pan out, he's in his 30s and was shitty at football. There is now a possibility that Brandon Goddamn Weeden will start a game for the Cowboys.

Jerry Jones, please never die.

Along the same lines, the Bears are considering bringing back Israel Idonije to probably a 1 year contract.

It's only fitting he ends up throwing to the guy (Dez Bryant) who probably made it possible for him to end up in the NFL in the first place. Look out NFC East! Hide your flags!

I haven't been a huge fan of Denver's free agency campaign this year. They signed some pretty good players, but it seems like it was a ton of money on very few players who don't even really fill positions of need. With that said, this video made it all worth it...

Strange day.

The Raiders give up a 6th round pick to the Texans for Schaub. Not a big deal except they take on his large contract too.

Jet release Sanchez & sign Vick. I don't think NY is the best place for Vick, too much media exposure and too much pressure, even if he never plays.

I don't think media pressure is the problem for Vick. It's defensive line pressure.

^ That too, but he was doing OK turning his life around in Philly, reagrdless of his on-field performance.

Maybe less so in the circus that is NY.

Being a Texans fan, just getting Schaub out of town for a 6th rounder is a good deal. Hell, I'd given him away if someone would have just taken his contract. Getting thrown a 6th rounder is just gravy. LOL

On the other hand, the Texans signed QB Ryan Fitzpatrick which I know full well they don't expect him to start. I'm pretty sure that means the Texans are getting a QB with the 1st or 2nd round pick.

There's a chance Keenum improves in the offseason. I think a lot of his problems last year were NOT his fault (really, the same reason Carr had trouble in Houston, too). It's like the Texans are destined to murder their own very good quarterbacks.

In his first couple of games, Keenum looked like his U of H self, then he quickly digressed because of the Texans HORRID right side O-line and Kubiak trying to make Keenum fit in rather than making the offense fit Keenum. That doesn't mean Keenum will suddenly blossom under the new coaching staff, but he's still under contract and will be around for one more year at least. With Fitz signing, T. J. Yates is a gonner because we will be drafting a QB.

The Texans under Kubiak were never able to get both the defense and offense clicking togeather, and a shit ton of injuries. Cushing is becoming as injury prone as Schaub and Andre Johnson seems like he's always playing with something wrong these days. Schaub's best seasons were with a horrible defense, then Schaub starting falling apart due to injuries and our defense finally improved to late for Schaub. Last year the whole thing just imploded. LOL

The Texans will probably win 6 to 8 games this year because of an easy schedule and maybe the new regime will inspire them or something. But hell, you can't predict anything in the NFL.
