The James Bond Film Discussion Thread (With Bonus Lazenby!)

Finally watched Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man last night and two things are clear.

1. Barring him going off on a Serenity style mad turn Knight should deliver a superb script. The man really has a knack for portraying male characters who are very masculine, strong, brave and determined, but also showing their vulnerability and the negativity that often comes with that masculinity. In terms of a 21st century Bond he really is one of the best writers to pick.

2. Cillian Murphy would have made a cracking 007 (even though he'd have been the shortest Bond!)

I have some quibbles with the film, along with the last few seasons of PB, but overall enjoyed it. I do think Knight should deliver a good Bond script.

Murphy would definitely have made an excellent cold, sociopathic Bond, but, as you say, he’d be very much on the slight and short side (same reasons he was better fitted to Scarecrow than Batman). Given that the last 3 villains have been recent Oscar winners, you’d imagine he must be a strong contender to be the next villain.

Having said that, I often find that Knight’s weakness is in writing Irish-related material - I had to stop watching This Town as it was so unconvincing and the Irish related stories in PB were often its weakest areas. So I do hope he doesn’t write a role for Cillian as an IRA baddie or something, as I anticipate great cringe as a result.

If you haven't seen The Veil, recommended. Also Knight and a spy drama. I could see some thematics being pulled from that

Bronson Pinchot as Bond?

This was one of my major issues with PB. Murphy just simply was not physically imposing enough to be the bad ass that Tommy was supposed to be. At least in Boardwalk Empire, the producers wisely had Buscemi as the guy who paid and ran the muscle, not the muscle itself.
