Their run differential was -110, and their team ERA was 4.79. They had some definite holes to patch.

The whole "Tampa Bay is paying Wade Boggs to go into the Hall of Fame as a Devil Ray" rumors (which he denied) freaked the committee out. They wouldn't let Gary Carter go into the Hall as a Met. Dave Winfield had the choice between Padres and Yankees. Obviously Albert Pujols won't be going into the Hall as a Dodger. Stuff like that would never happen.
Roger Clemens wanted to go into the Hall as a Yankee. They probably would've made him go as a Red Sox, but I guess that's no longer an issue.
The player should be able to make the choice, the only caveat I would add is that they needed to play for a team for 'X' number of seasons to choose it.
I heard on my local sports station this morning that MLB is asking all cities that have a minor league affiliated baseball team to upgrade their stadiums by 2025 or risk losing their affiliation.
For the city of Everett that would mean spending upwards of $80 million taxpayers money to upgrade the Everett Aquasox stadium.

The Padres have traded Juan Soto to the Yankees:
In exchange for Soto and outfielder Trent Grisham, the Padres will receive a package of RHP Michael King, RHP Drew Thorpe, RHP Jhony Brito, RHP Randy Vásquez and catcher Kyle Higashioka.
The Spankees can always use a me-first player and maybe the Pads can do better with one less of them.
