The FC version definitely feels more like a room I'd want to be in as a Captain than the Insurrection version.

I'm gonna be the oddball here and say I don't mind the brighter lighting scheme or the raised ceiling from Insurrection, but I do wish they'd been able to find a cleaner way to raise the ceiling than adding in those extra light fixtures.

Modeled the desk and the sofa bed today, and the Insurrection wall sconces

I'd never noticed until starting this build that the bed in FC was converted to a sofa in INS. I surmise that the sofa parts are stored in one of the many closets in the room when Picard gets sleepy.

Nice! I think the sofa in the TNG ready room was supposed to convert to a bed, but it was never shown. Neat that they used it for the film.

You've got to feel sorry for Picard, all he gets is one small little window which looks out to the side, and Janeway gets a huge wall full of windows, with a wonderful forward looking view!

Originally it was supposed to roll out from the wall (and blueprints from Season 1 reflect this, showing the rest of the bed beyond the wall).

Do we know why they felt the need to raise the ceiling in the first place?

Patrick Stewart commented that this film was really going to "raise the roof" and the studio, in a further effort to keep the Star happy, felt the need to take him literally.

Patrick Stewart and Anthony Zerbe are 5'9", and F. Murray Abraham is 5'10", so it's not like any of them were going to collide with the existing ceiling as it was.

Really nice. The biggest complaint I have is they didn't use that cylindrical fish tank in the film. That was so cool looking and tied in with the series/Generations fish tanks. Think about adding it Donny!

Oh, I’ve already thought about it and am considering it! The only issue is figuring out how to render a convincing aquarium in Unreal. I’m sure it can be done; just a matter of figuring out how!

I can only imagine it was done to make the set easier to light, or to make the space feel bigger, or to ease filming. Standard Trek sets of this era have a ceiling height of at least ten feet, the FC ready room set was 8 feet, 9 for INS. Possible filming with such a low ceiling was a challenge? I dunno. Spitballing here.

In any case, I will say “walking around” the sets in 3D, the raised roof of the INS ready room does make the space feel much more open than the FC set.

Maybe the lower ceiling was an attempt to suggest that the Ready Room was crammed in around the edge of the Bridge dome? Realistically of course it couldn't have fitted in at all

I read a long time ago that Stewart was strongly against the fish throughout the whole show, because no animals should be kept in confinement for our entertainment.

Wait was that not in the final set? I was sure it was - there was probably an early publicity still that is burned into my memory.

It shows up in this behind-the-scenes pic, but isn't on the final set. You can see a sliver of what looks to be some sort of sculpture behind Picard in the scene between him and Riker in the ready room.

edit: There's also some piece of artwork and/or artifact in that same corner in Insurrection; not sure if it's the same one as First Contact. Considering how much else they changed about the ready room between films, probably not.

Yep, that first pic is the one I'm thinking of - I just assumed it was in the set but not shown on camera. Amazing how I'm still learning new things after all this time.

I'm glad they removed it, because it doesn't actually look like it's part of the set at all.

Took the morning to model the Arrben Linda chairs seen in the ready room. Not the most exciting chairs compared to the others I've generated recently, but important nonetheless.

Thanks to @Lt. Washburn for providing his references of the chair.

Did they ever show the E-E's Ten Forward lounge, I can't recall. I'd love to see it.

They never did, no. There was supposed to be a crew lounge set built for Nemesis — in the script, the (deleted) scene where Picard and Data drink Chateau Picard after the wedding, and the scene where the crew toast Data after his death are both set there — but when they got down to filming it, both scenes look like they take place in Picard's quarters.
