In the mean time to satisfy your anime space opera needs you can check out the second season of Legend of Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These which is airing now. Another old franchise currently getting the reboot treatment.

In related news, Leiji Matsumoto (co-creator of the original Space Battleship Yamato) had something like a stroke yesterday in Italy. He has been hospitalized.

It appears it was some sort of electrolyte imbalance which is being treated. I guess his trip to Italy for the 40th Anniversary of Space Pirate Captain Harlock was a bit taxing on his 81 year old body. But he's doing better at last report.

Lots of good stuff there. Excellent find.

I’m currently working on orthos for the Amaterasu right now and that thing is ... quite challenging. I did a brief search to see if anyone did views other than the profile that we’ve already seen and nothing. Took a stab at it yesterday and those angled turrets and side mount platforms are breaking my brain spatially, trying to figure out how they’re supposed to look. Not giving up though. The challenge has steeled my resolve. I found photos of an excellent model that someone built around a stock Andromeda and it’s helped quite a bit. I don’t think I would even make the attempt if it didn’t exist, it’s so weird. Will post here when done.

Ooooh! That is NICELY done! I wonder if I should hold off on this one to see if others like it appear for the other views.

I really wish I understood Japanese. I'd reach out to this person in a heartbeat to see if they have any others, but I'm afraid that if I use Google Translate I'll probably wind up asking them if they have any dried apricots I can purchase.

From my experiences most Japanese artists can understand simple English, so you don't need to fiddle with Google translate.

The front view seems to be the only one they drew of it.

Something I can't quite tell is if there is just one variant of the new Earth battlecarrier, or two variants. Too much is covered up for me to tell if it is a just two drawings of the same design, or to different designs.

However it is clear that one has what looks close to the stern of the older version of the Earth Battlecarrier (labeled "Lexington" in the Star Blazers Game). It is also clear that one as a through-deck with the superstructure justified to starboard. One or both (if there are more than one that is) seem to have an angled flight deck., and the arrows would seem to indicate that she has some side mounted launch tubes just aft of the superstructure in a similar way to the Apollo Norm. Thus increasing her launch rate over the original version...which corrects one of its largest flaws.

It still has the landing deck right over the main engine...but you can't really make that homage design without that feature.

So I knocked out the last of the 2199 EDF designs, the Isokaze-class Destroyer/Torpedo Boat, of which Mamoru's Yukikaze is a member:

The one question I have is regarding the blue/white variant in the lower right-hand corner. I didn't find any names for it, as it appears to be a completely unnamed vessel. Just "Torpedo Boat" and a number. These are seen in 2202, flying with the Yuunagi (Kongo-class) battlegroups of similar livery patterns.

The very few we see of the post-war Isokaze types have been reclassified as torpedo boats, and aren't named. They have been fitted with wave motion engines and shock cannons, But they wouldn't be all that useful in front line combat. They have too few weapons systems (a problem the Marusame types have as well, though their problem is more a lack of defenses against missiles and fighters). The Kongo types are better rounded to still be effective cruisers/battlecruisers with the newer fleet ships.

I am hoping when the model kits for the patrol cruiser and frigate come out, they might get a class name, or something.

By the way, what is it the purpose of the hole on the bow?

Always wondered that myself. These are pre-WMG designs, so likely not that. Maybe a lesser main cannon or primary missile tube. Or, since we’ve never actually seen it used as such, we can go the Trek route and say it’s a sensor package or forward navigational deflector. Could also be a reverse thruster, for rapid all-stop or withdrawals.

That's the bow positron cannon, present on the Kongou and Murasame. It has the same caliber as the regular guns (so on the Kongou-class it would be a 360mm positron shock cannon and the Murasame 200mm). The 2201-refit enlarged the bow cannon for both the Kongou and Murasame to 460mm and 280mm respectively.

On the pre-2199 Cosmo Navy ships it was the equivalent to the WMG in charge time and vulnerability to use. On the 2201 refits it was probably quicker to fire.

Have we ever seen them using that front part as a cannon onscreen? I honestly don’t remember.

Best use was the first episode of 2202 with it zooming around firing at everything..
