Voyager fans.. are you disappointed about Discovery?

Do you know, outside of TOS, I never once felt the star of the show was the Captain?
Even TOS feels more like an ensemble most of the time.
I just never get that.
Not until the late TNG films, and producer credits start to have power and the writers only bother with Picard and Data, did I ever think of the captains as stars.

I totally agree with this post. TOS was about more than Kirk. It was also about Spock, Bones, Scotty, the list goes on. Some of my favorite episodes were ensemble, or even about characters other than Kirk.

The same is true of Voyager. I grew frustrated in season 7 when the big three swallowed the show. I love the episodes that include everyone or put the focus on another character. Shattered is a perfect example.

TNG was never my favorite but it lost all my interest when Data took the show over.

DS9 didnt really fall into that trap so much, maybe because it was more of a political drama.

Discovery seems to have simply handed the show over to Burnham and said 'What's an ensemble cast?' It is my number one complaint about the series.

I was a Data fan, but hated a fistful of data’s. By the end I don’t enjoy his episodes at all. Oddly, the Riker, Troi and Crusher episodes are better. I found Picard episodes mostly dull.

I think anytime you take a good thing and over use it, it turns sour. Every character they focused on had great things going for them but after being slammed with it over and over again I, for one, am done. I grow to hate the thing I loved before.

I think that’s true of a great many things, with the caveat of how it’s overused as well as simple overuse.

Agreed. This is my issue with Discovery. Not only is Burnham the center piece of all the episodes, but every possible interesting character arc is crammed into her character. It's a case of overload.

I agree with this. One thing i like about Voyager is that each character gets a few episodes a season devoted to them. With Discovery it's all about Michael all the time

It was very Star Trek V. She was in scenes she probably didn’t need to be in. The same got true of Tilly by the end.

I love it. It's something new. We've had twenty one years of "ensemble", time for a different approach. My only complaint is that Burnham didn't start out lower in the chain of command. Would've liked to have actually seen a "Horatio Hornblower" character who we see rise through the ranks to captain. John Byrne used this model when doing a Trek comic called "Crew". We followed Number One as a fresh graduate to first officer of the Enterprise and each issue took place some years later, and each with a different crew and ship. But she was the "star" of the mini-series.

The Trek franchise needs to find new approaches and new windows into this world. We don't need more of the same old shit we've seen on five shows and some twenty eight seasons worth of episodes.

Far too dark and dramatic for me. And the crew act like stroppy children, certainly not the level of professionalism you'd expect from a Starfleet officer. I understand that they need to bring Star Trek to a new generation, but they could have been a bit more subtle with it. I've always loved Trek for the sense of adventure, relationships between the characters, and the moral messaging. DSC seems to be missing all of that.

I'll still give season 2 a go. But for now, I am re-watching VOY after finally finishing DSC (binge watching was a terrible idea).

I am very disappointed!!! We haven't had anything that took place since Voyager got home since Nemesis (and that was right after Voyager!!!). It's not even in the prime timeline either. Spock never mentioned having a cousin... need I go on?

I actually enjoyed Voyager more than ever during my latest rewatch, after having been disappointed with Discovery.
It was much easier to not focus on the few thing they got wrong, having been reminded of the many things they got right.

I agree. I prefer Voyager to Discovery. I find the character development more balanced, particularily in the earlier seasons.

The only thing I like about Discovery is that they cast one of my favorite actors in it: Jason Isaacs.

Oh, what do the Klingons look like? I've not seen any promo pictures.
They look like angry, mean versions of the teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles, not like Klingons.

Here's the new season 2 trailer. They've given the Klingons hair to bring them more in-line with the Klingons of Treks past (I'm guessing so Worf won't look so different in The Picard Show), and there's even a classic Klingon Battlecruiser.

Oh yeah, and here's the new Spock:

I'm starting to think HAIR will be the definitive signature of Discovery. Why are the Klingons bald? Well they are not! Apparently they shave their heads and in Season Two of Discovery they do not anymore. Er... okay. Then there is the very hirsute Spock. Hairy chin, upper lip (is that a glimpse of a hairy chest :o). :klingon::vulcan:
