Voyager fans.. are you disappointed about Discovery?

As a "VOYAGER" fan, I don't see why I would be disappointed in "DISCOVERY". And to be honest, I wasn't.

I wonder if we did a cross section of fans of different Star Treks whether some are more in tune with Discovery. Like if DS 9 fans like it more than Voyager fans? I tend to think of Voyager fans as being happier in nature. That they would find Discovery too dark.

That would be interesting. However personally i don't mind the darkness of it. I enjoyed disc a lot as a standalone sci fi. But it was too different from the Star Trek I love for me to enjoy it as a star trek show.

I think it might be kind of like if you watched TNG and then watched nuBSG and the creators of bsg insisted it was the same universe as TNG. Both shows are really good but clearly not in the same universe

Interesting theory. But, I tend to break the mold because I love TOS and VOY for the light hearted adventure (even if I thought VOY could have been done better) while DS9 is interesting form a character POV. I guess they are different flavors of Trek to me.

I was more optimistic about Discovery on the rewatch than I was originally. I don't understand what Voyager and Discovery have in common, other than the lead being female?

Honestly, I don't know.

This is supposed to be a series which takes place in the TOS era but it doesn't look like TOS era at all.

It looks like a cross between Stargate Universe and........what?

I still get a "doom and gloom" feeling about it but if they get rid of the Turtles, I might give it a try.
Agreed. I'm leaning towards DISCO is its own universe, I'm getting sick and tired of useless words like "Prime" and "Kelvin" because only several Trek series share an actual canon to another. VOY, DS9, and ENT has a direct connection to TNG, as TOS films has one with TNG, but none of those shows or films appear to have a canon with TOS accurately. None. It seemed Into Darkness was trying to link ST: Enterprise into their new universe which I would openly accept.

If a series is claiming to be part of a universe which was already established, then the producers and the Production team should make the effort for the series to look like that series or come close to it.

Well, they are supposed to be a split of the timeline, so there is a shared history, especially given 2009's reference to "Admiral Archer's prized beagle" :)

Even TMP and TWOK struggled with that a bit. I once heard it compared to a band who tries to recreate the sound of their first album. They can't really do that due to the lessons and mistakes they've made over the years. Everything is unique because it is still a learning process. What fans consider to be classic or part of the world was something that had to be made up on the fly to get the episode done.

Why make these easy assumptions about Trek fans? Voyager fans are happier in nature? From where did you get that idea?:wtf:

I don't think I'm ready for a rewatch but I personally find binge watching a good way to invest.

I honestly don't think i could binge watch Discovery. Too intense and dark. I could handle it watching one show a week, though toward the end I found it a bit of a struggle.

catshadownsi8 so it's not just me? It is dark like even in its visuals. Some like that but I wanted adventure actually :)

Oh we are definitely on the same page Refuge. The whole show was not what i expected but i gave it a shot. I'm hoping it's more exploration and adventure in season 2. I'm not looking for Game of Thrones in space. Lol

Btw Cat is fine. Its been my gaming/internet name for years.

Cat is good. I also think our two avatars look fine together in conversation!

I agree with this. It was quite dark. Which I don't mind in a show. I love Game of Thrones and I loved Battlestar Galactica. But Trek was never that. Even in DS9 it got somewhat dark with the war but still maintained the optimism of Gene's utopia and had some lightness to it. I enjoy Discovery as a Sci Fi show, but not as a Star Trek show.

I have heard that season 2 will have more space exploration, anomalies, and such so fingers crossed.

I am disappointed in Discovery mostly for superficial reasons, but overall, I honestly do feel that this series is still in its growing pains ... there is a lot of untapped potential, here. My main issues are with the Art Direction. I hate most of the sets on this ship (though the ship itself is alright) and the uniforms are particularly offputting. I do not care for certain characters, but what can you do? I love TNG with a zealot's passion, but I cannot stand Lwaxana Troi, or Reginald Barclay, amongst others. It can't be avoided with these shows. I DO like how different it's trying to be from STAR TREK television, as we've known it. For example, how - for the first time - the star of the show is not the captain of the ship. In the end, it's just difference for difference's sake, but it's appreciated. I feel that the show should be more fun, overall, and that the writing could definitely improve.

I believe that once Discovery has found itself, it will be one hell of a show. It may even break the cycle of 7 year series and go way beyond that, which would be quite historic for this franchise. When Enterprise hit it's 3rd year, it was like "FINALLY!!!" the show got GOOD! It had its own "voice," it's own style, and it seemed like everything was coming together, for a change. Unfortunately, they changed things up, yet again, for the fourth season where the texture, the flavour of the show wasn't quite the same and that was disappointing. I hope that when Discovery pins down it's own identity, they run with it. Were I to rate this show on a scale of 1 to 100% in terms of how decent it is, I'd rate it at, uh ... I don't know ... it's about 75% of where it should be, I'd say. But I just hope that it realises that being more fun doesn't mean being more like The Orville, because Orville doesn't own the corner on the market of fun ... even in Sci-Fi. STAR WARS is fun, for example. Just let Discovery continue to be it's own thing, whatever happens ...

Do you know, outside of TOS, I never once felt the star of the show was the Captain?
Even TOS feels more like an ensemble most of the time.
I just never get that.
Not until the late TNG films, and producer credits start to have power and the writers only bother with Picard and Data, did I ever think of the captains as stars.
