This is casting I don't think I could've ever seen coming, should be interesting!

I know she's a comic, but I'm not really sufficiently familiar with her work (or her acting) to have an informed opinion. Is this a good thing?

She's fantastic. Funny as hell.

Unfortunately, I doubt we'll see much of that given how dreary this show is.

Never heard of her. Though, as they describe her as the chief engineer of the USS Hiawatha, I guess we should infer from that the action will be spread on another Starfleet ship than Disco or the Enterprise.

She's a mediocre comedian/C list actress who looks 20 years older then her actual age.
She's one of my favorite comedians, I find her show One Mississippi incredibly moving, and women are worth more than our looks. Besides which she's 47 and five years ago she survived a virulent cancer which required a double mastectomy; you show me how old you look after that.

I'd hire her just on that fact alone. Love survivors.

Not familiar with her work, but she's hardly the first comedian/actor to be cast on STAR TREK. See also Whoopi Goldberg, Sarah Silverman, even Frank Gorshin, who made his name as an impressionist back in the day.

And, of course, there's an alternate universe in which Eddie Murphy helped Kirk save the whales. :)
