Yes I think Trump does believe he could win a nuclear war.

To be fair to him though, back in the 1980's US and NATO strategists were looking at ways they could possibly "win" a nuclear exchange with Russia - all those strategies that Joshua demonstrates in the tic-tac-toe climax of Wargames are based on actual theoretical scenarios gamed out by the military.

Let's hope no-one has introduced him to the game Defcon. Several times I managed to wipe out the Reds without a single nuke landing on my cities.

Kim Jong Un' s Grandfather Kim II Sung, the first North Korean leader, was raised in a Presbyterian family. Kim II Sung's father and grandfather were elders in the Prebyterian Church. This family has a strong religious background which might explain how they turned North Korea into a Quasi Religious state with the family being seen as divine and worthy of worship.

As an aside, I don't think a lot of people realize that the name of the band Megadeth is a political statement drawn from the write-ups on those scenarios: they used the term "megadeath" as shorthand for one million human deaths, in order to discuss the scenarios more analytically and dispassionately.

That might actually have been the case with the Cuban Missile Crisis. The only ICBM the Russians had then were one or two Sputnik launching R-7s--and they were a bit wonky then.

None of the cheaper missiles in Cuba that were aimed at the US were active. So there was little threat of something out of THE DAY AFTER. That had to wait for the USSR to move into what was known as Deep Parity.

The problem was that it would have been a tactical nuclear hell for all the hawks who wanted to invade Cuba, what with Kometas and the Free Rocket Over Ground missiles aimed at Gitmo.

The DPRK is a bit beyond what Cuba had at this point however.

With these NK missiles being lobbed over Japan, the chances of a malfunction causing Korean War part 2 increase..
if a missile does land on Japanese soil. it's over for Kim..and Seoul...

This is a very astute rundown of the situation. :techman:

Trump seems to have made the rookie mistake of taking obvious propaganda at face value. Yes, the North threatens the South (and America) on a regular basis. No, they have no intentions of actually invading or nuking anyone. But Trump doesn't get this, likely because he is not capable of meaningful abstract thinking. People always accuse Trump of being a liar, but I think it's not quite that. Trump is someone who says whatever he thinks people want to hear, in order to improve his standing and ego, and in the moment he very likely believes what he says--and if he forgets five minutes later and contradicts himself, he believes the contradiction, too. He's not a smart person and he seems to have no capacity for retaining information beyond a dossier of all the people who've slighted him over the years, upon whom he must get his payback.

You are correct. I liken him to the eternal Reality Star, desperate for the next piece of publicity, an inkling of positive feedback to validate his existence. He's somehow forgotten, however, that in actual reality he needs neither any more, yet his ego won't loosen the grip on the notion of "If I stop talking I become irrelevant" (If only). He's a disaffected, lonely child that appears to have clear abandonment or rejection issues that have never been addressed, only compounded upon.

And regarding his dossier. You're right, he's so inept he can't even keep a list in his head. I mean, even at just 12, Arya was able to keep track of her list of Westerosi without any issues!

Would you have a better question if you removed everthing in the thread title after the word Trump? ;)

Trump doesn't like anyone waving the stick at him. If someone does, he's got to be the one waving a bigger one. It doesn't help that he's the President of the most powerful country on Earth. His ego meter must be off the charts when he's waving that stick and he's probably enjoying it.

Yeah, that is the biggest threat to this, a missle falling short and hitting land rather than the sea, then no matter what Kim actually wanted it would be out of his hands as a retaliatory stike was sent to NK.
