    2. Janeway promised him support at his next parole hearing. Or something to that effect.

Presumably he would have a reduced sentence.

She would have testified but would have been surely even more motivated to pull strings for Tom Paris (besides an exemplary attitude during the mission, didn't she considered him as her personal project, like Chakotay called her investment in the helm officer, from the moment when she required his presence with her aboard Voyager?!), so his prison sentence would have been significantly reduced (I read on Memory Alpha, that he was sentenced to 18 months of detention at the Federation Penal Settlement in NZ, for treason, due to his collaboration with the Maquis).

And if Voyager had never been sent to the DQ :
    - Janeway would surely get e married to Mark Johnsson and navigating of missions in missions -> the couple would have quickly divorced but her carrier in Starfleet would have been the same but slower,
    - Tuvok would continue to accompany Janeway in her missions,
    - Harry Kim would still be an enseign on another vessel (or would request to keep serving Janeway) and would evolve in ranks slowly but certainly.
    - Chakotay, B'Elena and Cie would have been convicted of treason, and sentenced to varying lengths months' imprisonment in Federation Penal Settlements -> if Tom had 18 months after to have spent only a few weeks with the Maquis, I let you imagine what those who really served the Maquis would have had... . I guess a life sentence!
    - Kes would always be prisoner of Kazons and Neelix would always be stuck on his vessel and kept looking for a way to take out his fiancée from there
    oh and,
    - Lt Carey would be still alive!

Just curious why you think Janeway and Mark would get divorced

In that case, I suppose I would have been deprived of 7 years of Voyager entertainment.

Well, maybe I'm wrong but when I refer to what the character of Mark Johnson is supposed to have done in the series (letting go of the past (*) after only 6 months, after Starfleet HQ declared Voyager and her crew lost, to date a woman who worked with him before marrying her). He seems to be the kind, "As the saying goes, out of sight, out of mind ans heart" and pretty soon!

In fact, that Janeway is found herself (with her crew) stuck or not in the DQ, would not have changed much with Mark Johnson. They would eventually separated, not because they would no longer love each other but rather because, as a pure product of Starfleet, her military carrier would always pass before her personal life, which includes Mark (**). And the latter, who is a civilian man contrary to Kathryn Janeway, would eventually get tired of her ‎repeated absences (with missions which would endangered her) and so, the lack of a normal married life (with a wife & maybe children). Result: he would surely have ended up going elsewhere after a certain time ‎and it would have ended in divorce!

(*) I can't imagine that Gretchen & Phoebe Janeway, Kathryn's mother & sister would have given up so quickly and easily to return to a normal life, ‎if they have even tried to do it!)
(**) ‎That either Mark, Chakotay (if he and Janeway have ended together at the end of Endgame & if he had been left free after returning to Earth, of course!) or someone else, who is in her life. By the way, please, notice that Kathryn Janeway, become vice- ‎still bears her maiden name, in Star Trek: Nemesis, suggesting that no one shares his life with her.

I wonder how long it was until Voyager was declared lost.

But it is a common theme in Tre that Starfleet people who are married to non Starfleet people have difficulty with relationships

That's one way to look at it. It also doesn't give Mark the benefit of the doubt. Grief has a way of bringing people together. Another possibility is, from Mark's point of view, his fiance'e died. In his sorrow he turned to a friend, a workmate. What started out as platonic friendship and support quickly developed into a romance. Perhaps this new woman was very similar to Kathryn. Do we know how long Mark knew this other woman? If they'd been friends for years then that also helps speed the relationship along.

Spousal love, romantic love is much different from family love. Of course Janeway's sister and mother are going to grieve differently than Mark does. They have a different relationship. You simply cannot compare the love of a mate to the love of a parent or a sister.

In Message in a Bottle, didn't the Dr. say (when he got back from the Alpha Quadrant after talking to Starfleet), that Voyager had been declared officially lost 14 months ago. Prior to their present time which was in the 4th season.

Yeah the seasons aren't representative of years spent.

Why not? They seem to match Earth years more or less without problems (even though certain "birthdays" and "anniversaries" in DS9 appear to involve Bajoran years or whatnot, the only hiccup in VOY would be the "anniversary" of First Contact, and it's just a matter of the alien Neelix getting that wrong by one full year).

As for Paris' "sentence", we don't really know if he got one. I mean, TOS makes it a big point that people don't go to jail any longer. Instead, they go to penal colonies (the NZ spot was called that, too) where they get cured of being criminals, and it supposedly takes as long as it takes. If Tom doesn't get cured, he'll be in there forever.

Garak and Kasidy Yates got six months, one for attempted genocide and the other for smuggling band-aids. Wouldn't make sense if that were a punishment, because unless punishment is scaled with the severity of crime, it just makes everybody lose all respect of law. But if both got cured of their criminal urges (Garak never attempts genocide again, Yates never smuggles band-aids again), it may well have taken them about half a year each. Although how long it took the doctors to recover from "curing" Garak, I shudder to think...

Richard Bashir got two years for boosting his son, the only term with its length known in advance. Sounded like punishment to me. But that was in accordance with an ancient law, and it's not as if repeat offense would have been an issue here.

As for the fates of Chakotay and his crew, Seska may well have gotten to them before Tuvok had the chance. Cardassians supposedly have ideas about crime management that wouldn't make Drs Adams or van Gelder rub their hands in glee...

Was it six months for Mark to move on.. that isn't long.

I hope he looked after the dog and didn't get a replacement.

Did Garak get six months for attempted genocide or for tampering with Federation equipment?

I mean really? And how exactly did they go about rehabilitating somebody like Garak? "Don't do that" "That's mean"

Was there not something in one episode that stated that Tom's sentence in NZ was eighteen months long?

I think that it was never mentioned in any episode, not even in Caretaker (except that the Rehab Commission is very pleased with Tom's work, that they've given Janeway their approval to discuss the idea to give him a mission (to find a Maquis ship that disappeared in the Badlands a week ago) where he would be a Starfleet observer during the mission and finally, that he helps Janeway find that ship and in return, she helps him at his next outmeet review but at the end, when the mission will be over, he is cut loose).

However, if you read Jeri Taylor's Mosaic & Pathways, Tom's sentence is stated clearly with the why and how. which led him in a Federal penal prison.

Hate to sound like a try hard but having watched Non Sequitur couple of nights ago I checked the transcripts..

KIM: ..Wait a minute. Paris. Where's Tom Paris? Computer, access service record of Starfleet officer Thomas Eugene Paris. (reads) Convicted of treason. Sentenced to eighteen months at the New Zealand Penal Settlement. Paroled on stardate 48702. Last reported whereabouts, Marseilles, France.

If I remember well "Non Sequitur"'(= when the conclusion doesn't follow the premises), this action of this story took place in an alternate reality, where even if dates & characters looked real, what happens to them, wasn't It's like a lucid dream and I guess that everything having to do with THIS Tom Paris 2.0 (who was going to die in the explosion of the ship), was based what Harry knew about Tom (his agitated past, his favourite place on Earth, etc...). Result: when Harry came to his senses, he found out that Voyager was still in the DQ, that it was Janeway's voice he heard and finally that his best friend was still alive and healthy.

Anyway, a very strange Kim-centered episode!

Yes it was some temporal time slip thingy. That being its technical term.

Harry had to recreate the conditions of where he had been affected by the alien interference to have even the slightest chance to get back. Tom helped him preferring to have a better reality himself.
