Rewatching Trek by subject: what subject would you choose?

wildsulu

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
I like to watch Trek per subject/theme. A while back I watched everything about the 'augments' aka Khan's men. I watched all related episodes and movies from Space Seed up to the augment episodes of Enterprise and also CumberbatchKhan in Into Darkness. That was a lot of fun!

Also I'd like to rewatch the episodes that are about the Federation's economic system: Make a list of episodes/movies that are about people's work or where they do some sort of payment. From ordering drinks in The Trouble with Tribbles up to Jake & Nog trying to buy a baseball card for Captain Sisko.

If you were to rewatch Trek by a certain subject, what subject would interest you the most?

I'm currently working through a lot of TOS "bottle shows" in order to concentrate more on the Enterprise sets and life on the ship, as opposed to visits to strange new worlds.

"Balance of Terror," "The Naked Time," "Journey to Babel," "The Corbomite Maneuver," "Charlie X," "Elaan of Troyius," etc.

Episodes that take place almost entirely aboard the ship.

Well, it is not something I would ever admit to choosing or liking, but when I actually do watch Star Trek by subject it's time travel. I don't know why. My browser pops up the Wikipedia template on ST time travel stories whenever I type "time". It's weird given that half of those stories are... to avoid harsh epithets... not that good.

You writin' a book or somethin'?

Same here.

Always!

Most of the time, those episodes are my favorites no matter what the series is.

As to the question, the only time I remember doing a "theme" was spending a rainy afternoon stuck at home with nothing to do, so I made a cheeseburger and some popcorn and watched first "The Tholian Web", then followed that with both parts of "In a Mirror Darkly", and then followed that with "Mirror, Mirror". I was gonna follow that with "Crossover", but by then, I had spent three hours watching TV, and felt like doing something else.

Really? I've always liked them.

Civil Liberties - the "legal" episodes. "The Omega Glory". "Court Martial". "Measure of a Man". "Author, Author". All of Captain Kirk's appearances on Boston Legal. ;) That sort of thing. But I would probably never go through the effort to actually assemble and watch these this way, unless maybe I was teaching a class.

Hmm...one possibility might be to choose 'explore strange new worlds' episodes, which is supposedly what it's all about in the first place. :)

Checking in on Earth colonies or outposts might be another idea.

Non-humanoid entities, perhaps?

Shuttlecraft stories might be another option.

I'll give it some more thought...

Ooh, thought of a better one.

Episodes that take place entirely or mostly inside a character's mind.

Inner Light, Far Beyond the Stars, etc.

I've never considered watching the shows by theme, but I think it's a great idea. Personally, I'd go for the "might-have-been" episodes - the one's where the crew are not in their right environment or situation, or even their right minds - The Paradise Syndrome (TOS); Frame of Mind (TNG); Empok Nor (DS9); Resolutions (Voyager); Twilight (Enterprise) and then Star Trek (;))

Haven't done this recently, but back in college, when TNG was still being first run, I'd put together theme nights of sorts in the rec room of my dorm showing VHS tapes grouped by Klingon politics (specifically Worf's dishonor eps), Romulan encounters, Data stories, etc.

Gathered a fairly good crowd at the time. Had fun putting together 3 or 4 eps for an evening and collating the tapes. Did not seek prior approval from the commissioner :D
