"Agent Carter" season one discussion and spoilers

Yeah, I read the comics. Doesn't mean I have to like it or the way that one scene became Hank's identifying moment. Partially because the artist misinterpreted the scene.

Exactly. As Jim Shooter explains it:

http://www.jimshooter.com/2011/03/hank-pym-was-not-wife-beater.html
In that story (issue 213, I think), there is a scene in which Hank is supposed to have accidentally struck Jan while throwing his hands up in despair and frustration—making a sort of “get away from me” gesture while not looking at her. Bob Hall, who had been taught by John Buscema to always go for the most extreme action, turned that into a right cross! There was no time to have it redrawn, which, to this day has caused the tragic story of Hank Pym to be known as the “wife-beater” story.

When that issue came out, Bill Sienkiewicz came to me upset that I hadn’t asked him to draw it! He saw the intent right through Hall’s mistake, and was moved enough by the story to wish he’d had the chance to do it properly.

Shooter's in error; it's not a right cross, but a backhand sweep of Hank's left hand (although his right is clenched into a fist). Still, Hall clearly drew it as intentional and extremely forceful.

So it was one isolated mistake (both by the character and the artist) that fandom latched onto and exaggerated into a defining trait of the character, even though it was never meant to be. It didn't help when The Ultimates took the meme and ran with it, making that version of Pym an actual abusive husband.

The mistake that was made was that followed up on it and kicked Hank out of the Avengers and divorced the Pym's. It's almost as bad as the rape of Carol Danvers. Shooter mishandled both events, but they're both part of the character's history.

But my original point was that Pym is an entomologist, yet he first built Ultron. And really some of Stark's inventions that were stolen sound outside of of his field of study. He should've stuck to perfecting the flying car. ;)

Agreed 100% about Carol Danvers, but there was little anything Shooter could have done in the Pym case other than damage control. The pages came in too late too be redrawn and he had to continue on with the story as presented.

They followed up it though, but then the Pym marriage was a rocky one for a while.

I didn't think it was such a bad thing, in of itself. He married her while he was out of his mind, the guy had a history of problems and that's one of the things that sets, or used to set, Marvel appart from Dem Comics characters that never had any problems at all, well until everything became unrelentingly DARK and GRITTY©®™.

Hank is a biochemist. He only got into entomology because he was trapped in an anthill. His next invention was a cybernetic helmet. So he has some skills in engineering.

OKAY...THE FINALE!!!

(Loved the last ep, BTW--thoughts on it later.)

Act I:

Cute to bring back the radio show....

It's amazing how much Sousa's been able to take. I'm starting to wonder if his leg's really gone, or if it's phantom pains--

OH, CRAP! SOUSA'S POSSESSED!

Love that smirk the doc gives Dottie, i.e. "You imbecile."

Black cop in NY in the 1940s.

Glad to see Sousa's okay. And glad Peggy's back in everyone's good graces with last ep.

Thompson needling Sousa about it. :p

AND...Stark turns himself in for REAL!

Thoughts on the last ep:

I find it VERY interesting that Peggy doesn't let Sousa off the hook when ripping into the guys for their sexism. Even Sousa...but perhaps Peggy's just making a finer point about how he should've trusted her? Either way, he's accused of viewing her as a damsel in distress....

Alas, poor Chief. Figures the efforts to make him super-sympathetic were just build-up to his heroic demise.

Act II:

At last, the truth about Finow. And the explanation for the mooks with no voice boxes....

"This is private property!" I am of Mother Russia--ve despise priwate property!

Turns it AROUND: "This is fine now." Heh-heh.

OOH...he took the blood!

Lol, Stark took the blood, that may or may no longer contain Steve's blood. Ivchenko could have switched it. Peggy could have switched. Maybe now Howard could switch it. By the end of the ep, no clue whether it'll be real or not, or who could have it.

Act III:

Love the Barbara Stanwick crack. And that Thompson's giving the speech Howard is dictating!

Oh, crap. Spies...everywhere.

Whoa...that--is diabolical. "Destroy the symbol."

And Howard flirting with Dottie and either not remembering or pretending not to so as to provoke her. It certainly worked.

Act IV:

I love Jarvis's face as he confesses about the hangar...and Peggy's reaction.

Howard, you can be an idiot when it comes to spilling secrets to beautiful women.

Why is there no mention of Gen. McGuiness? Or is the doc indicating "He is already dead, so you vill have to do." If so, I wish he'd say something like that.

Wow. I love it--Howard's deepest regret, in the end, is not being able to save Cap.

I finally recognized Ralph Brown but it's been at least a decade since I'd seen him in The Phantom Menace and on Lexx.

Act V:

Ooooooooooooh boy--Jarvis volunteering for what might be an heroic sacrifice.

So of course Dottie's got Matrix skills.

Okay--Peggy, do NOT assume she's dead. DO NOT!

Okay...time for Thompson to have his night--

Guess not. The night's Sousa.

Okay, the villain's taunt. Sousa, you KNOW he's stalling--do NOT let him touch that ring....

OOOH, THOMPSON!

"Was he saying something!" Good!

Okay...here we go....

Act VI:

Wow. Powerful scene...bringing everything full circle.

Figures Dottie's body's gone.

Thompson called her "Peggy", not "Margie". And he's the new Chief.

Good to see Peggy's friend didn't 1) die, or 2) turn out bad.

Great moment with the blood. And "The Way You Look Tonight"....

Oh, crap. OH...CRAP!!! OH, CRAP--OH, CRAP--OH, CRAP!!!

Good to see Peggy's friend didn't 1) die, or 2) turn out bad.

Yeah really, she was just a plain old real person. How do you like that!

Nice little surprise Hydra cameo there at the end.

Good call by Peggy too on the blood. It was probably the best way to protect Steve's legacy.

A little surprising that Thompson got put in charge at the end there. Perhaps season 2, if there is one, will focus more on the founding of Shield and Peggy being put in charge.

And while she turned down Sousa due to "other plans", that looked like a genuine smile to me while she was standing there thinking about what he just asked. So I think she intended to take him up on the offer soon enough.
