Worst 2014 transporation deaths: Korean Ferry or MH17?

This year has seen two mass casualty travel related incidents. (well actually three if you count MH370 but no on knows how those poor souls met their end-it could have been anything from nose diving into the ocean, to gently touching down and then starving to death while the plane floated around undetected to an agonzing7 hour oddysey of trying to break into the cockpit to no avail)

MH370 aside as we don't have hard facts we do with the other two tragedies. Each has been pretty horrifying and I've been going over in my head what was worse...being trapped in a below decks with no possible escape as the ship is flooding...or being in your airplane seat one moment and the next you are free falling to a certain death outside of the airplane?

Both are horrible...just excruciating ways to leave this world but in the end the ferry may have been the better way if there is such a way to go...water rushing in, a few seconds of gagging and then blackness. What is hard to comprehend is what it must be like to find yourself surrounded by airplane debris and 300 other screaming people falling towards the ground and no chance of a miracle. Do any skydivers on this board no how long it takes to fall 30,000 feet...to a novice it seems like it would be a long time making what those passengers went through terrifying beyond belief.

I was morbidly wondering what everyone thinks was the worst way of these two tragedies. Rest in peace to hundreds who lost their lives.

I think just asking which terrible accident, and whose deaths, are more "tragic" is in tremendously bad taste.

It's one thing to turn hypothetical disasters into a still morbid game of "Would you rather...?" but to turn two very recent real life ones into a competition is in exceptionally bad taste, as mentioned. They were both awful and no one should have to suffer through either, period.

Remember that one was a criminal act, the ferry disaster was due to gross and willful negligence (cutting safety and training in search of ever more profits) and the airliner more as the fortunes of war (airliner mistaken as a military transport and shot down by a hurriedly trained missile crew ) the only thing I can say is that at least the airliner was quick, the poor souls on the ferry suffered more and probably would have been saved had the captain issued the abandon ship order when he should have.

As to which was worse..I'm not gonna make that call.

If the explosion doesn't knock you out, the decompression will. You won't be conscious during the fall to Earth.

Remember that one was a criminal act

First thing's first.... I'm from the Netherlands, and I think it's important to make sure we realize, there is still no prove that this was a delibarate act. It looks like it was all a huge, HUGE mistake, but not a delibarate attack on this specific plan, premeditated and all.

Does that make it less bad? Nope. But we need to keep cool heads around here, before things are made even worse with accusations that might not be true. I don't care about 'well isn't it obvious'. Maybe, but there's this big thing about being innocent untill proven guilty....

Second of all.

In total, hundreds of people have died in both these events. To ask which one is worse, is bad taste. People are still mourning. Hell, even if they weren't, it was still a wrong thing to ask. Personally, I feel this entire topic should be deleted.

Well, when it was posted a week ago, it was immediately called out as morbid and in bad taste and responses had stopped by the next day, allowing the thread to die until someone inexplicably resurrected it today.

I'll close it (not delete it), because it was already on the way out and it sucks, but next time, you'd be better off just hitting notify rather than bumping the thread first.
