So, I'm watching the pilot episode of Space:1999, something I haven't seen in decades and I've noticed that Barry Morse bears a striking resemblance to Patrick Stewart (If you shaved off his hair.) But...what's really strange is his acting, his speech, the way he phrases words, is very much like Stewart-as-Picard. At the very least, they could pass as brothers.

When I see the name Barry Morse, I immediately picture Sam Jaffe from Ben Casey. It must be the hairline.

If you're too young to remember Ben Casey, well, look it up. It was regular viewing at my house.

I've found that a number of English actors have very similiar speech rhythms and deliveries. Try comparing Michael York and Patrick Stewart sometime. I figure maybe they learn a certain style of line delivery in the RSC or the Royal Academy or something (or both, since Stewart was in the former and Morse in the latter). I didn't actually notice a Morse-Stewart similarity in my own recent S'99 rewatch (that's a hard show to abbreviate), but I wouldn't be surprised.

And yeah, Morse might've been an interesting choice to play Robert Picard in "Family." I never thought Jeremy Kemp bore that much resemblance to Stewart, but maybe Morse could've worked. (Although the unattainable ideal would've been Sean Connery.)

^^Watching Downton Abbey I've noticed that the Mary and Edith characters have almost identical delivery. Almost as if they're perpetually bored.

    It's probably training.

Actually, it was the way he spoke that first reminded me of Stewart/Picard and then I noticed the physical similarities.

"Mosht thingsh in here don't react too well to bulletsh...Jean-Luc!" :)

Speech is what I'm talking about. I have a good ear for sound patterns such as speech rhythms. So if I had noticed a similarity, it would've most likely been a vocal one.

I'd've loved to have seen Morse as Jean-Luc's brother.

This is thread-related only by virtue of Barry Morse, but a couple of years ago, I finally got around to seeing Barry Morse and Carrol O'Connor together in, what was it, The Twilight Zone, or The Outer Limits? (I forget which...that's the downside to binge-watching a show...)

Anyhow, though the story drove me batty with its time-repeating loops, Morse and O'Connor were extremely good together. I like seeing actors together who otherwise you'd never think to associate with the other.

Oh, and I think Grace Lee Whitney was in it, too.

^That was The Outer Limits: "Controlled Experiment," written and directed by Leslie Stevens. And yes, Whitney was in it.

All I remember is the opening: "Man... woman... birth... death... infinity." And other shows of the time (Dobie Gillis for one I think) would spoof it by having Casey with very, very hairy arms.
Picard singing and dancing his way into our hearts every week. With E. J. Peaker as Beverly Crusher.
    Outer Limits: Controlled Experiment.
Yes, she's the girl, and the guy she shoots is Robert Fortier, whom Scotty drank under the table in "By Any Other Name".

He is also about 15 years older than Patrick Stewart.

Sad that. Barry could play Picard, but I don't think Pat would have done as well playing Victor.

Timothy Dalton as Rassilon reminded me quite a lot of Patrick, only (again) with hair.

    Nah, Jeremy Kemp owned it.

Interestingly enough, I'm now watching the season 1 episode "Voyager's Return" which guest stars a much younger Jeremy Kemp. " :)

A Frenchman with a Scottish accent? Although I guess that's no stranger than what we had.

I have a hard time seeing Connery doing the "kiss" thing at the end, though.

First thing I thought of! I still don't have the DVD sets, but that's one of a handful on VHS and it's pretty good.

I think it's merely indicative of their theater background than anything.

Yeah, that's one of the better episodes IMO.

By the way, I didn't mean to suggest that Kemp wasn't good as Robert Picard. He was just fine. I simply think that Morse would have brought something different to the role that I would have been interested in seeing also.
