Today, we celebrate the careers of two of the greatest pitchers in history, one of the greatest hitters in history, a remarkable manager who has made ending domestic violence his life's cause, a wife-beater, and a drunk.

Curt Flood? Still a footnote in history. :(

In happier news (because I'm legitimately disgusted by Joe Torre, who has dedicated much of his adult life to ending domestic violence and is a survivor of it himself, standing next to wife-beater Bobby Cox), Greg Maddux thanked his brother for teaching him to light his farts on fire during his speech today.

I did not expect that.

Got any evidence to back that up?

    Always.

The Cox issue went pretty similarly to the recent Ray Rice issue: His wife wouldn’t testify, "the best" prosecutors could do was pre-trial diversion.

Edit: And this isn't me hating on Torre. This is me being disgusted about Cox and him being allowed to stand on the same dais as Torre.

I still like the Braves/Nationals. It's had its ups and downs, but you know someone is going to talk trash every year.

Are the Dodgers and Diamondbacks still going at it?

That was a feud between petty owners, not the fanbases.

This is probably one of the most stacked hall of fame classes I've seen in recent memory.

Three indisputable players and one indisputable manager, yes.

I still can't put into words how angry I am about the change from 15 to 10 years for ballot eligibility, though.

Yeah, where did the eligibility thing even come from? I wasn't even aware of any conversation about that happening. It just seems like they made the decision willy nilly. That was a definite head scratcher for sure.

Basically, the "Steroid Era" guys have retired, and they're entering eligibility soon.

Also, SABR-era guys like Dave Cameron (who is an idiot, but could also probably put together a non-moronic ballot) and Keith Law and other similar writers are coming up to their 10-year membership in the BBWAA ... which means that they get their Hall of Fame votes. And they'll vote for guys like Bonds (not Sosa), which somehow makes the Hall of Fame invalid in their minds.

There's still a huge movement in the BBWAA that believes that sabermetric dudes are just goobers living in their parents' basements, or would like to describe them as such. By making the ballot period from 15 to 10 years, that means that the SABR guys only get a few years of voting before guys like Raines fall off. Raines only has three more years on three stacked ballots before he falls out -- and that's wrong.

well, maybe not the fanbases, but I saw the brawl at Dodger Stadium just like you did. Are you saying the owners were behind that?

I'm watching the Giants and Dodgers now on the ESPN game of the week. The rivalry seems pretty healthy and Jake Peavy seems more than willing to join the struggle. He seems a little too amped about this game but if a guy can join the team and go right into "fuck the Dodgers" mode then the rivalry is pretty good. As long as it stays on the field of course.

Update: You know Peavy is pumped up when he just fist pumped a first pitch strike to A.J. Ellis.

The Braves are hated by everyone else in the NL East. It's not just the Nationals.

It's just whoever is in contention. The Braves/Phillies rivalry was better in my opinion but with the Phillies falling off that one has cooled down.

Angels give up a total of two runs in three straight wins against the Tigers.

And gain no ground on the A's.

    Chuckle.

The Angels won't catch my boys. :)

The only way this fight will be settled will be when the A's and Angels play 7 games against each other at the end of August.
