Vulcan Menstrual Cycle?

Yvaine

Okay this is a terrible thread, I am sorry. But I was thinking,

do Vulcans menstruate?

I'd expect so, considering they procreate, but I was wondering how it would occur due to the pon farr.

Okay I am sorry byebye I am so sorry

In all seriousness, that's actually an interesting question.

I'm sure they do, but I'd have no idea how that would work. Of course we know nothing about Vulcan gametes. I supposed it's not impossible males produce the ovum per the Pon Farr cycle.

I know many fans have a fetish for "in universe" explanations, but I wouldn't take the Vulcan seven year mating cycle too seriously. I think it's a joke on the colloquialism "seven year itch."

OMG sooo simple. Howcome no-one else has thought of that before?!

On the good side, it only happens once every seven years.

On the bad side, though, the PMS is a real bitch (no pun intended). If we'd encountered T'Pring at any other time, we'd have thought her one of the kindest, sweetest, honest and selfless people we'd ever met. :D

Another, somewhat-related questions, how do Vulcans age? Do they just age slower than humans, reaching maturity at 40-50? Or after a certain point in life, their bodies slow down in ageing?

It would truly suck to spend 60 years decrepified but since medicine is magic in the future the Vulcans we know and love probably don't suffer much.

Of course, we've thought of it before. It's been posted on this and other boards. I pointed it out somewhere once, myself. As you say, it's so simple.

That said, even if it was a deliberate allusion (I think it probably was, but I have no citation to a Sturgeon quote to back that up), this says nothing about what the Vulcan cycle is like in-universe. Natch.

It may well be Gerrold anyway. ``Amok Time'' says nothing about a seven-year cycle; for all it says the pon farr could be a one-time deal. It's ``The Cloud Minders'' that makes the seven-year cycle when the mating drive ``outweighs all other motivations''.

(Possibly earlier drafts of ``Amok Time'' make it a seven-year cycle and that's where ``The Cloud Minders'' got it.)

Good point.

All the Vulcans don't go into pon farr at the same time do they? The government would shut down, and there would be planet wide chaos. So it would make sense to me that the females don't ovulate all at the same time either (once every 7 years). I mean, they CAN have sex at any time, right? Just every pon farr, the desire to procreate is unavoidable. Maybe this is needed to ensure the survival of the species; a species controlling emotions to an absurd degree may not produce enough young for a stable population.

I don't know, but I'd wager that the Romulans are less stoic about theirs. :bolian:

the 7 years thing is misunderstood. vulcans can have sex when ever they want. however during pon farr they must have sex to survive. it is false that vulcans only have sex during pon farr.
