I'm really looing forward to this series, MTV feels like an odd fit but I'm willing to see what they do with the series.

MTV has Teen Wolf and it is pretty good fantasy show.

Yeah I know but once upon a time MTV played music videos too. ;) Still this is a far more ambitous of a series than Teen Wolf.

What does MTV stand for again?

I mean, I hope the series is as good as I remember the books being, but the genericizing of cable channels continues.

At some point they should just number the channels and drop the names, ala BBC.

Music usually played in the background television
TRU TV, which formerly was all about non-scripted shows, are now playing scripted dramas (namely repeats of the new series The Last Ship late at night); Animal Planet is running reruns of Dirty Jobs (which usually as little to do with animals, except for the occasion run-in with pests); and the long-stagnating Biography channel just recently gave up and rebranded themselves as FYI (a combination of Food Network, The DIY Channel, and the former Style Channel).
Niche programming, once the keystone of cable television, died some time ago. All that's left are the few zombies still walking around.

^ Which is a shame, because, why the heck do we need 250+ channels if they're all evolving towards being the same?

I loved cable TV in the early 80's (when MTV was really MTV) and even 10 years ago, when the channels still had their own identities.

Of course, so many of them are owned by the same companies now too.

You know, that' s really not a bad idea. I finally got around to reading First King a couple of years back and I fully enjoyed it. It would make a good entry point for a series, then as you say, tailor it a bit to skip the events of SoS, or at the least, make it so that you wouldn't have to show it. A few simple references to it perhaps, down the road as you continued to adapt the books from Elfstones onward.

I don't think he's planning on getting around to it, but I'd really like to see Brooks do another trilogy set between the duology and First King. There's still a lot about the formation of the Four Lands and the First War of the Races that I think would make for an intriguing narrative.

supposedly we're getting a stand-alone book or two here, and then a final set of books to close out Shannara. Not to say he won't go back to the well and fill in things somewhere, but he's planning to put a wrap on it shortly....

Yeah, I remember reading that somewhere awhile back, probably on Terry's website. I think the final trilogy is supposed to be another 100 years or so after the events of the Dark Legacy trilogy (which I haven't read yet and won't until I get the third volume). I'm curious to see if there's any references to any of the Genesis or Legends novels.

The future of music video TV isn't in MTV, but in new channels that steal its thunder, like this one here in Canada (AUX TV) that do what MTV and it's Canadian counterpart Much Music used to do-show music video, concerts, documentaries on artists and groups, and rock movies like Spinal Tap and Wayne's World. I hope that more channels like that can happen in the USA taking after AUX TV's example.

MTV has digital cable tier channels like MTV Hits, MTV Jams, MTVU, and VH-1 Soul that just plays music videos.

VH-1 Classics tends to mix it up with scripted shows and movies, but they also regularly show concerts and documentaries on various artists and groups...as well as rock movies like Spinal Tap and Wayne's World.

^ I wonder if DISH has those tier channels. I know it doesn't have local channel tiers.

^DISH most definitely has those, but as part of a group or package that you have to buy.
