Do you still enjoy the 90's X-Men cartoon?

Yeah, but we were looking for the "no additional cost" price range ;)

Also, I tend to want to avoid unnecessary clutter among my DVD shelves.

It's available on Amazon instant video so I went ahead and bought seasons one and three. I'd rather have the ability to watch it on the train or bus and treat it like an audiobook or one of the Star Wars radio dramas. Especially since the DVDs have zero extras and the transfer is painfully mediocre according to IGN. i'll listen/watch and follow the comics alliance reviews when I'm tired of viewing The Wire in conjunction with Alan Sepinwall's reviews.

Well, sure. I bought them all a couple of years ago on DVD out of overwhelming nostalgia and impulse.

Also still love it (apart from the last season, I'd rather pretend that didn't exist.)
I have the R2 complete series boxset which is very nice indeed.
Sure there are some duff episodes, but plenty of excellent ones to override them. Notably the season finales, and the two Phoenix arcs.
Still think the ending of the first arc is probably the highlight of the series.
"The light. Oh Scott, if only you could see it..."

Random question though while we're on the subject. In Season 1 (episode 7 to be precise, "Slave Island") Cable appears on Genosha, helping Gambit and wanting to take down the Leader. The Genoshan guys just refer to him as a mercenary, and no reference to him being from 3999 is made. Then when he appears in Season 2 and beyond he looks exactly the same but is now from the future.
Just wondered if anyone who remembers those episodes and knows their X-Men lore knows what that was about

Ah yes, the Cable conundrum. As far as I can recall, there was never an explanation given for his early appearance on Genosha, and his seemingly lack of familiarity with the X-Men he crossed paths with.

I'm still surprised over learning about the alternate title sequence created for the show's broadcast in Japan. There was a second opening done for later in the series' run, also on Youtube.

They even took the extra step and did next episode promos as any (then) current anime show would have had. Wow. Saban went all out for the show's release there.

When in doubt, turn to Doctor Who.

"Wibbly wobbly, timey whimey..."

I watched this as a kid. But I gotta say, a lot of the voices really just grated on me. I especially couldn't stand Jean Grey or Xavier's voices.

Wolverine was superb though.

Yeah, Wolverine was a relief especially since they gave him an Australian accent in previous animated attempts like the 80's pilot (Which inspired the arcade game strangely enough) and I think some episodes of Spider-Man and his Amazing friends.

Of course we do have an Australian playing Wolverine now-full circle :)

^For me, Wolverine and Beast as well.

Well, Patrick Stewart is my definitive Charles.

i loved the series as a kid. i was reading the comics before the show began, but it really got me into finding back issues of the stories it adapted, like Phoenix/Dark Phoenix.

do i still enjoy the show today? yeah. there are some things...ok, lots of things that i laugh at. but when i read X-Men comics i still hear certain character voices from this show.

I wish Disney still ran these on late night Saturday and Sunday along with all the other 80's and 90's Marvel toons. Honestly, it's older people watching cartoons at 2 am, and we could care less about Kick Buttowski.

And the X-Men in general. First Class is a great movie, but I remember other people saying this as well, that without that core of Cyclops, Wolverine, Jean Grey, Storm etc, it just doesn't feel like the X-Men. And I think that comes from growing up with that show.

I did used to wish watching it thought that the team line up could have changed a bit, but it was always the same 8 X-Men. And all the others like Nightcrawler, Colossus, Iceman, Angel etc only ever guested and never stuck around.
Interesting as well that Kitty Pryde never featured, anyone know why? Maybe related to the failure of Pryde of the X-Men? Or that she would be deemed too similar to the role Jubilee had.

Could be because in the comics of the time she was over in Excalibur, along with Nightcrawler. Most of the main X-men featured in the toon were part of the "Gold" and "Blue" teams featured in at the time X-men and Uncanny X-men.

I especially couldn't stand Jean Grey or Xavier's voices.

I could see Jean's moaning grating on some people, but I think the woman's voice itself is gorgeous. Wish she'd done more work outside of Resident Evil 3. I may give The Border a shot, but I imagine it's just a watered down 24. I don't like Xavier's voice in the cartoon quite as much as Patrick Stewart's, but I still think it fits the character.

^LELLANDRA!!!! AAAARRRRHHH!

Cedric Smith was fine, when Xavier was speaking calmy, or being introspective. But when shouting,it became very grating.

While I liked the show, I'm fine with different X-Men on the time. Its probably because, as much as I love the cartoons, I'm an X-Men comic fan first. So, I REALLY liked seeing W&TXM use people like Emma Frost, Shadowcat and (sometimes) Nightcrawler, and I didn't think missing Jean grey was a huge deal (although I like the character). There are so many X-Men I like, I'd be fine with a whole team that didn't include Storm, Cyclops, Rogue, Beast, Jean grey, etc. That said, I like having some of those characters there, but there are a lot of X-Men, and I like seeing variety. Personally, if I was to choose a team that kind of mixes it up but still has some familiar people, I'd go for something like Wolverine, Storm, Psylocke/Emma Frost, Shadowcat, Nightcrawler, Colossus, Beast and Iceman/Angel.

As for the voices, most are ok, but none are the definitive. Steve Blum is Wolverine to me, any animated version that isn't him just isn't the same, although 90s Wolverine was ok. Personally, I always imagine Patrick Stewart as Professor X's voice, and he did voice him in several games that weren't even connected to the movies.

I loved the show when I was a kid, but I tried watching it recently, and it just doesn't hold up, especially when you compare it to BatsTAS which aired around the same time.

I've never been a big comic book fan and know nothing about them outside of what I've read on wikis. One thing I've always wondered, did Rouge ever fly? That always seemed kind of silly to me.
