Fan or not or...

What am I? I have no special desire to be called this or that, but this got me wondering.

I more than like TNG, but not most of it. There are less than 50 episodes I watch, when I watch the show.

I don't consider myself a casual fan because those episodes I like, I worship, best show ever and almost a reason to live.

So, I am a TNG fan... but in a way I'm not because majority of it is skipped...

Situation is kind of similar as with my favorite music, I'm not a fan of any certain band as a whole but there are some albums and songs from certain artists that I really like. For example a band named Dark tranquillity. They've released 10 albums, but my favorite tracks are from 2 of them and that's it... can't get into the rest of them, at least not so far. Same thing with all the other bands. Maybe I'm too picky...

A picky TNG fan? Which puts you in line with most Trek fans. Not everyone likes everything and that's what makes Trek fans great. The issue is the fan base who says "my Trek is better than yours" or looks down on fans for liking a certain series or even denies the existence of other Treks.

Although I consider myself a TNG fan before DS9 and VOY, there are most definitely episodes with stories in DS9 and VOY I'd prefer any day over certain TNG episodes and stories.

But if I were exiled to a remote island and had to make a choice which of the three, it would be TNG that would keep me company there. :)

Whereas I've enjoyed all the shows to varying degrees, but TOS would be my desert-island pick . . ..

DS9 was a totally different show. It was a fun watch, but you'll only get mileage out of it if you enjoy political intrigue and don't mind uneven storylines.

Voyager was more like TNG, not nearly as good, but more consistent.

On a scale of 1-10, 10 being amazing, DS9 and VOY never really went above 7 IMO. But they never really went down less than 4 or 5 except for the odd episode (Anything with a Jadzia story, or that horrid Tom Paris "Threshold" and most of the Kazon stuff)

TNG on the other hand, had the tendency to have in a season, maybe 10 episodes that were at least a 7, and out of those 10 eps, 2-3 were spectacular, like a 10 out of 10.

The rest tended to be ho hum, and every season had at least 2-3 really bad stinkers (less than 3 out of 10).

So I'm the same as you, I love the good TNG, and just filter out the really bad TNG.

Well put, I too search the good ones and enjoy them, all programs have their stinkers and they need to go.

Nice to know I'm not the only one. :)

I can't really disagree here (love TOS but watched it more often), but TNG has to offer 100 more episodes for that desert-island. ;)

Agreed, being a fan of TOS and NuTrek as well. I'd still pick TNG over them all though.

TNG to me is the most "sciency" as in it's the only one that actually feels like an exploration of our galaxy.

No other series felt like that. TOS to me felt more like the swashbuckling adventures of Captain Kirk.

And that's a problem? :)

Not sure I agree. For me, TNG felt very much "been there, done that", in comparison to TOS.

There's only a couple TNG episodes I would completely skip *cough* up the long ladder.

I feel the same way as the OP about Battlestar Galactica the new series which I recently watched. I liked some of it quite a bit but there is a large chunk that I just would not watch again. Not sure if I would call myself a fan.

This is completely me. I am WAY more than a casual fan of TNG, and watch it regularly, but I don't watch all of the episodes. I don't watch any other Trek.

TNG is the equation that works, for me. Even though there are episodes I do not care for, they are too few to consider myself anything but a FAN of this series. All I can say is "thank you, Gene Roddenberry" for capturing lightning in a bottle for a second time!

I'm in this boat as well. TNG > DS9 > TOS Movies > JJ-Verse > TOS > TNG Movies > VOY > ENT

TOS>TOS movies>Abramsverse films>TNG seasons one and two>Enterprise season four>everything else.

Hmm, for me it might go like this:

TNG > TOS movies > Voy > TOS > nuTrek > DS9 > Enterprise > TNG movies

My preference shifts with time (and may be different than a previously posted line up) but currently, it's;

TNG > DS9 > TOS Movies > NuTrek > VOY > TNG Movies > TOS > Enterprise.

Though, I do like them all.

Going on a Star Trek board and saying you're a fan, but not a fan, is like saying "Yeah, I shoot up a couple of times a week, but I'm not a junkie."
