Do you watch TNG movies?

Can't recall the last time I watched one, they seem so ick compared to the 1st 6, like lifetime/syfy movie like.

Let me put it this way: I don't watch them alongside the other movies. ;)

I'll happily watch 1-6 back to back, and I'll watch GEN-NEM back to back, but typically I'll only ever watch the latter if I'm already doing a marathon screen through of the TNG series from start to finish anyway. I never transition from TUC directly on to GENS, and I almost never simply pop one of the TNG movies in and watch it in isolation either. But I'll seldom do that last thing with the TOS movies either, so that isn't just an TNG thing.

But yeah. I tend to keep a line of seperation between them. When I think of Star Trek Movies I tend to think of 1-6 as being a cohesive unit in and of themselves, whereas I think of the TNG movies as just being post-scripts to the superior TV show. And I will usually only watch them as such...

Didn't help they offed the Galaxy-class Enterprise and replaced it with the super-ugly Sovereign-class.

Yeah, I must admit I watch the TOS/JJ movies regularly as opposed to annually or less with the TNG entries.

Only when I'm on a run through the entire film set. Don't know that I have EVER picked out a TNG movie to watch otherwise. At least not after the new release mania calmed down. I do remember frequently watching Nemesis for the SFX after its release. Now, no.

As with LOKAI, I do watch JJ and some of the TOS movies outside of the marathons.

Like I said above, the strangest thing for me is that I just can't watch the TNG movies alongside the rest, despite GENS trying very hard to provide a plausible 'bridge between generations'. I don't know if its because the "TV team" of Berman and co were behind them, but all of the TNG movies just feel like extensions of the TV shows. For some reason the TOS movies don't feel like that. I can watch any of the first six, or indeed the Abrams films, either in isolation or as part of a run. The TNG movies I just can't bring myself to sit down and watch in their own right, they have to either be a part of a run through of the TV shows or I don't watch them at all. I don't know if that's common in the fandom though...

Seriously this is my biggest complaint about the movie.

There's about 5 minutes of coolness at the beginning of the film with the Borg battle.

Then they spend the rest of the movie, half of the time with "drunkie" below, and the other half on the ship with the Borg Queen trying to have sex with Data.

    Fanwank at it's best

    True idiotic decision.

The ship was part of the show. You can't do Back to the Future 2 with the Delorean being crushed and being replaced with a Pontiac Solstice.

But they thought they could crush the Galaxy and replace it with that horrible insect looking thing that we got?

Sure I watch them, but no more or less then the other Trek movies. Some I like more then others, but the same can be said for the TOS movies.

    No. They're all rotten.

First Contact is less rotten than the others.

I heartily disagree about the ships though. Ditching the vile, ungainly and squashed looking Enterprise D for the elegant and poised E was a good move !

I for one was happy to see the Sovereign. It looks far more Enterprise-like than the D.

It's because TNG went straight to movies without "resting". And so everything about it, right on down to the recycling of sets and props and models, just made the films feel like big-budget TV-movies. We weren't given time to "miss" the TNG crew. Lots of people miss them now, but they didn't when Generations came out. If the TNG movies had started around the time Nemesis came out, then it could track more of a TOS-film way (albeit challenging due to Data not aging unlike Brent Spiner).

TOS, on the other hand, had a 10 year gap and was completely retooled when it made the leap to the movies. The production design made a very strong shift from the 60s aesthetic to the Star Wars era of motion-control. This is symbolized with the Enterprise Refit rolling out of drydock, and all the other films surfed on that new foundation.

And yet, for me, the wonderful cinematography and lighting on GEN made it by far the most atmospheric and cinematic of all the TNG movies. The D looked magnificent in some shots, and way the bridge was shot is pure magic.

I watch Generations sometimes, but I haven't sat through "First Contact" since the time my mother was watching it on Labor Day last year. I originally bought Insurrection on DVD, watched it once, never watched it again.

As for Nemesis... what I mainly do is I watch the opening scene where whats-her-face kills the senate, then I skip to the big battle at the end, so I can pretend I'm actually watching a really expensive TNG episode (I also like to mentally substitute the E-E with the E-D, since the -E looks like something my dog pinched off after eating a rawhide bone).

There was nothing wrong with the cinematography and lighting of Generations.

The biggest problem is that it played out like a direct-to-video release.

I mean, the biggest action scene in the whole movie is the destruction of a bird of prey (itself a recycled FX shot from TUC).

They could have kept the same look and feel as the series, but with a 200 million budget, imagine what could have been. Something on an epic level. None of this "one madman wants to get to an energy ribbon" sillyness.

Killing Kirk and destroying the Enterprise D were the 2 final nails in the coffin.

I would be inclined to watch Generations and First Contact, those are the only TNG movies I acknowledge that exist. But I rarely watch those TNG movies to begin with.

Like most, I`m more partial to the TOS movies. The ones I watch more often than the others are WoK, and UC; UC being my favourite. It`s ironic considering I much prefer TNG to any other series.

Are you insinuating that a sci-fi needs action to be worthy of a theatrical release? Or that a Star Trek movie needs action?

Because: 2001, TMP, TVH, Enemy Mine, Moon, Sunshine

I would say that general audiences expect action from Trek theatrical releases. Especially over the last twenty years.

If they are on TV than I might give them a look. I really don't watch the movies that much, even though I own all of them except Nemesis and Star Trek Into Darkness, which is on netflix.

I've seen Generations and First Contact a few times since their theatrical releases. I've been meaning to rewatch all of the TNG movies, as I've only watched Insurrection and Nemesis two times each, and have forgotten much of the details of both. (Probably because I didn't really like them the first time around and they didn't leave a lasting impression).

If you actually watch the season-end TNG episodes back to back -- Encounter of Farpoint, Best of Both Worlds, Redemption, Unification, Descent -- before watching Generations, it fits in pretty nicely and is in fact the best two-parter of the entire run. It's only in comparison with the TOS movies that it feels tired and underdone.

Having said that, Insurrection felt EXACTLY like a two-parter TV episode; it was slightly better than Time's Arrow but not quite as good as "Gambit." First Contact was a bit better, but the story becomes incredibly silly with repeated viewing (not unlike "I, Borg") and it's best not to expose yourself to it too often.

The TOS movies are still fun to watch after all these years. The TNG films feel like a chore.
