As for "merde"... either their censors didn't understand it, or they assumed there were no French-speaking people watching TNG.

I prefer Firefly's ample use of close-but-no-cigar words to contemporary profanity, since ours is so utterly overused it has no meaning whatsoever. Rutting and gorram have rustic charm their 'real' counterparts lack completely.
