Thanks for doing this one...definitely see the blandness. Those are 3 colors, right? Can't tell if it's 3 or 2.

Interested to contrast the TMP uniforms with TOS colors

Should be two, but the grey was hard to duplicate over Scotty's red. The other greys don't quite match up either but I did my best.:p

The high definition pics of TMP show more than 2 colours for sure, although not among the senior staff unless you include medical whites. Junior crew wear blue-grey, white, beige, sunflower yellow, and brown. You certainly miss the red from the above pic.

If you go for a 2-tone admiral's type uniform as standard, what colours should you use? The white tabard looks better with darker colours and some of the department colours are hideous. Maybe a coloured border for the relevant department would look ok?

I always liked the TWOK uniforms, I think they worked well with that particular story, which was essentially a "Hornblower in Space" war movie.

I think the TMP uniforms were a better match for the concept of the overall franchise, which was first and foremost about scientific exploration first and shoot-em-up space battles second.

That is horrible; I could not imagine that working on late 60s TV. Adding to that, TMP's starfleet insignia was too cartoony in appearance, with the circle, thicker outline, etc.

Exploration was a part of ST, but there's a large amount of action/fighting in the series, too--enough that it inspired "which series has the tougher crew: TOS v. TNG?" debates of the 90s.

TMP's uniforms should have added more of the military touches of TOS (pants/boots) and dropped the soft, psychologist's office colors.

Here are a few more I've finished thus far:

With The Motion Picture colors, definitely a throwback to Where No Man Has Gone Before...

I'm not sure what to make of the original series colors in The Motion Picture setting. They might look too Mego action-figurey against the muted set colors. Maybe I should have muted the uniform colors a bit. The pants are problematic, too..

The tops look good, especially McCoy. But you're right about the trousers, they do now have a pyjamary look to them

Looking at these some more, I realized there's an easy solution:

    [IMG][IMG]

I think it works. Familiar and functional. I've heard that director Robert Wise wanted costumes that wouldn't distract from the actor's faces. Well, wouldn't dark pants do the job even better? :)

(Oops...only now have I noticed that I completely missed Decker in the background! :o )

LMFAOschwarz, that looks great. One suggestion, taking a cue from some of Warped9's colorizations, would be to make the bridge elevator door some (toned down) shade of red. That adds just an extra touch to remind us that we are watching "real" Star Trek. ;)

Far be it from me to turn down a good suggestion, CorporalCaptain! :)

Really does make it seem more like "home", doesn't it?

Yes! :D Thanks to Warped9 for being the first person I saw to do that.

Wow what a difference. Good eye guys. Those shots do look quite good! The muted colours do look better. The change of departments could get confusing though. Uhura is now operations so presumably she, and Ilia should be wearing beige/mustard.

Yeah, this look is definitely working for me. :)

I liked McCoy's medical whites, so I left that untouched. In contrast to the other colors, it really seems to say 'doctor'.

Another nice thing is that this look lets everyone have their cake, or however it goes: the crowd that can enjoy the updates, and also those who say "This is what it always really looked like." (i.e., the 'new' Klingons).

You thought about McCoy's uniform is... "logical" :bolian:

These uniforms look a lot better... THIS would have made much more sense. Good job!

TMP is the closest we'll get to seeing The Lost Years on screen.

Shouldn't Decker be a gold shirt? He's the XO subbing for the science officer.
