The Last Ship - Discussion Thread (spoilers possible)

There was a line toward the end of the episode stating they had about a week's worth of food supplies left.

I finally watched today and I liked it a lot. It was better than THE FALLING SKIES premiere, though I know that will pick up.

It's definitely a good fill in for the summer.

They were headed to Cuba, with one weeks worth of food left, after raiding the Italian ship. At least they dealt with it and didn't think the audience was that dumb.

 

I know I am late to the conversation, but I thought the nuke was launched at the refueling station they were headed towards. Since they obviously have a spy on board revealing plans, i thought it was another attempt by the Russians to disable or strand the ship.

 

Yes, because if you want to disable a ship, the best thing to do is nuke something right next to it.

 

Maybe there are enough differences.

On The Beach was written by Australian author Neville Shute, and the main focus was on the people living in Australia (particularly Melbourne) who are biding their time before the radiation cloud moves south and wipes out all life.

A US sub features because they was in Australia at the time of the nuclear war (between the USSR and PRC iiirc) and it heads north to see if there are any signs of survivors in the U.S.

The original was referenced in Tom Clancy's Sum Of All Fears and it was made in to a rather atrocious mini-series with Bryan Brown and Amande Asante about 10 years ago.

 

I'm liking this show. I don't care what's wrong with it story wise. It's got terrorist-shooting, it's got five-inch gun fire, it's got Rhona Mitra looking all hot and dedicated... this is my summer show.

 

Although not what I consider masterpiece television, this show is holding my attention and keeping me entertained, so I can't complain. Some clichés are practically telegraphed at the beginning of the episode, like the crew being pissed at Dr. Scott until she helps out in sickbay, save a guy's life and now everyone loves her. And then you have the tough SEAL breaking down and crying at the end of the episode. But when the action goes down, the show certainly delivers. The showdown at the warehouse was definitely the best part of the episode. Sure, you knew the good guys were going to walk away and the terrorists weren't, but that wasn't the point. It's just a good, old-school fight where the bad guys get their asses kicked by the good guys, and that makes it awesome.

Meanwhile, in regards to the continuing story arc, we learn this week that dogs are immune to the disease, which only reinforces the prediction I made last week that dog DNA is going to somehow hold the key to curing the disease making Halsey the Dog the saviour of humanity.

 

Still better than tonight's Falling Skies.

 

Finally Hollywood gives us the real red-blooded Haliburton Blackwater boys and shows the evil and deadly terrorists that Obama keeps letting out. America, fuck yeah!

Gotta say it is fun Bay style summer entertainment. I've been enjoying it for what it is though Adam Baldwin is making me feel old.

 

I was surprised to find out Adam Baldwin is actually in his 50s, meaning he would have been around 40 when he did Firefly. He didn't look that old back then.

To be honest, he doesn't really look that bad in The Last Ship, though I do find his bald spot a bit distracting at times.

Let's be honest, that isn't really very hard.

I don't think he looks bad but age is starting to show. I've watched Adam since My Bodyguard as a kid so it's just making me more aware of my own aging and I don't need any more reminders!

 

I'm surprised how much Eric Dane looks like Dan Patrick (ESPN, The Dan Patrick Show).

That's who he is! It was killing me when I saw the Doc and I was thinking "I've seen this guy somewhere..."

 

The Chief Engineer of the ship in this episode seemed to be a woman - she was also at the briefing with Scott. But the chief engineer last week seemed to be a man when Chandler stuck his hand in the fuse?

And what role does the marine's girlfriend fulfill on the ship - she seemed a bit random to have at the meeting that otherwise seemed to be department heads. The lesbian character appears to be the navigator, unless I'm reading their roles incorrectly.

 

Considering we've only really seen any indication of sexual orientation on 2 characters, it may be a little early to say who the "lesbian character" is.

 

Well - the only character who has thus far identified as lesbian (or bisexual at the very least) then - I think her name is Granderson judging by the scene in the Comm Shack.

 

There were three guys with Chandler in that scene, a junior engineering officer (young Asian guy), an enlisted man who I don't think said anything, and the ship's Master Chief (black guy who called Chandler a badass). Nothing wrong with introducing another character this week and establishing them as the chief engineer.

I assume you're referring to the one who spoke of her "girlfriend." I just assumed she meant "girlfriend" in that context that girls sometimes refer to their friends as. Granted, I don't think anyone actually talks like that anymore, but the US military does have that whole "don't ask, don't tell" thing. Or has that policy been lifted?

As for the "Chief" Engineer. I think we are going in with a Trekkers prejudice of always seeing the head of department or Red Shirts
