A new episode will be out every two weeks. There will be 26 episodes (30 minutes). Each episode will be online for two weeks only. SD-Version is free to watch, HD for a small monthly fee.

I can´t seeing the first new episode on saturday. Sailor Moon is THE heroine from my childhood.

I think the artwork (based on the manga rather than the 90s anime) doesn't translate well. The arms and legs are waaaaaay to long. Also, the eyes look creepily uncanny valley.

...I'll probably still watch it, though.

Huh. I never realized Sailor Moon was heavily cut/censored.
The english dub was, one of the prime examples of a cut and censored crap dub, it's quite infamous.
Most other dubs were quite faithful with smaller changes.

I assume you watched the portuguese dub if you're in Brazil, I have no idea what was changed in that but I doubt it was as bad as the american version.

The european dubs are mostly not even 5% as bad...although all have their little shortcomings and problems.

The list of "offences" is pretty long for the existing english dub:

1. whole episodes missing
2. changed the plot (a lot)
3. a whole season missing
4. even the video itself was changed
5. crappy CGI "scene change" animations
6. Added dialog to parts where NOBODY spoke in the original
7. made Sailor Mars a total asshole
8. "Valley girl talk"
9. debatable music and sfx instead of the original (at least THAT was changed later)
10. they never made up their minds what to call stuff
11. changed attack names that were ALREADY in english in the original to weird new names and randomly changed them.
12. relationships between people changed...lesbian couple turns cousins...uh...what?

Well..I don´t think I need to go on.
All that will be fixed in the new dub. The author of the manga herself choose the new voice actors btw. The voice she choose for Sailor Moon is an almost perfect soundalike to the japanese voice actress (Mitsuishi Kotono).

I find it very interesting that you think the eyes look "uncanny valley"...in the FB group I´m in lots of people find the eyes "lifeless"....and I really don´t see it that way. On the contrary...they look very much alive to me.

7. made Sailor Mars a total asshole
I actually liked that about the character.

Glad to hear that it's getting a re-release. Now we'll get an end to the story, and Neptune and Uranus won't have to be in the closet. I hope the voices aren't too different. Looks like they're releasing it in chunks though, so it'll take a while for the whole series to be available.

It's also going to be streamed on Crunchyroll, so that's best place to watch it. It's free if you don't mind SD quality or waiting a week for new episodes.

To be honest, I can't pinpoint exactly why I find the eyes so off-putting. Maybe the look of the new anime is too glossy and robot-like.

As for the censoring, I remember that in Brazil, they based their dub on the Mexican version, where they turned one of the villains into a woman, because he was in a romantic relationship with another man. Sigh.

Weren't two of the Sailor Scouts made into Cousins in the Amrican version? But actually lesbian lovers in the original?

Yes. It's quite ridiculous. Like seeing gay couples would somehow "convert" kids to be gay, instead of getting them used to being tolerant.

I've never really seen the dub version of the show. I caught bits and pieces on TV years ago and pretty much gave it the ol' :wtf:. There was just something about it that didn't sit right--I guess it felt too much like an American Saturday morning cartoon than your run-of-the-mill anime series.

But it was often pointed out to me how silly it was I'd never seen it, and so finally someone [here] pointed me towards a good fansub. I never got around to watching all of it--there's just too much. But I did at least appreciate why it was so popular.

And after learning all the stuff they'd done with the dub, I've never had any inclination to go back at watch it.

I think it might be the modern animation. It's a common problem with computer-generated stuff.

A lot of artists have found that the precision and consistency of computer drawings removes some of the "charm" of frames that are drawn strictly by hand. It's sort of like vinyl and CDs.

As such, the "classic" anime art style has changed a lot over the last decade. The eyes have become smaller, chins and noses are more rounded, etc. In a lot of cases, anime characters deviate quite a bit from their manga counterparts--this is quite common in shows of the last 4-5 years.

Really, I'm surprise they chose to stick so close to the manga style. I suppose it's an attempt to nostalgia-grab.

As far as the "glossiness" goes, that's an even more common problem. That burnishing effect is totally a computer thing. And it's accentuated with digital film, such that many, if not most, of the studios have abandoned the classic bright colors completely in favor of pastels. And those that still choose to use brighter/ [12] basic hues, run the frames through heavy desaturation filters.

The effects might be subtle, but they do make a difference. American studios really don't do anything like that, and IMO just about any American-made cartoon from the last five years or so looks way too artificial.

Again, I'm surprised they didn't do that here either. Though, this is only a preview and perhaps they plan and doing something in post.

As for the censoring, I remember that in Brazil, they based their dub on the Mexican version, where they turned one of the villains into a woman, because he was in a romantic relationship with another man. Sigh.
That's terrible, on many levels.

So they're streaming Crystal, right? Any word on the original SM, DVD release or ???

The release of the original SM is planned as follows:

1. Streaming in japanese with english subs
2. later..DVDs and BlueRay with the new english dub

Sailor Moon Crystal has already been licensed for DVD in north america by VIZ.

I've been interested in Sailor Moon when I was younger, but passed on it because of all the changes they made. But now as an adult I'm not too sure it'd be my cup of tea, it's cool they're finally releasing the uncensored version of the show though.

Funny thing about the "cousins" change in North America. That was done by Cloverway Industries, Toei's North American arm. I think DIC would've gone with very good friends.

I understand why the changes were made in the original English dub, but I don't agree with them all. And Mars was altered from manga to anime... in both versions. For example, she wasn't into dating at all because of her dad in the manga, but was rather boy crazy in the anime.

ETA: I watched the new transformation. I thought they went a little too Vocaloid, but the music was improved from the original Japanese version.

Magical girl stuff is not really my thing, so I think I'll pass. I will give the soundtrack for Crystal a listen though, since it's by the same composer who did Fairy Tail, Naruto Shippuden, and the Hell Girl series and I love the music in those. The only real exceptions to the genre I've liked were the Madoka Magica and the Lyrical Nanoha franchises.
