Especially now, if there is truth to any of the rumors that there will be, in fact, three more books instead of two. The show is guaranteed to overtake it at that point based on is current speed of publication. I agree that "Winds of Winter" will be the last one before that happens.
That was just one of the things GRRM was throwing out as a way for the show to stay behind him. It has no chance of happening. None of the actors are contracted for that, for one thing, HBO would end up with a TV series with no proper ending, and some films that you have to watch a 70-hour TV series to understand properly.
I think he meant a TV movie shown on HBO.
No, Martin floated the idea of a big budget theatrical movie, or even a trilogy of movies, to end the series.

Considering how much they already have to cram into a 10 hours a season, I'd loathe seeing a single movie wrap things up. And considering it would be a TV movie rather than a theatrical one (for all the reasons already mentioned), it's just an awful idea all around.
It'll conclude its run as a TV show.
The Children was cinematic as all get out. I think a limited theatrical release for a season finale or the show finale would not be a non-starter. Worked fine for the Doctor Who 50th anniversary episode.
Not just any 70 hour TV series. A 70 hour TV series that everyone is watching. I've striked up so many conversations with strangers from around the world because of this show.
It would be a movie for the fans and they would go watch it (unless they download it).
I'm thinking two endings. A TV show ending and then a big budget movie with the dragons and white walkers.
So not an ending, then. The dragons and white walkers are part of the TV show, and allegedly meant to be the main threat. They will be resolved within the TV show.
Well.. it's established that the only thing that can easily kill a White Walker is dragonglass (as seen with Sam) and valyrian steel as its forged in dragonflame.
Now.. if you remember there are dragons alive again so if dragonflame can hurt them put two and two together and come up with your own theory what may happen at the end

Yeah, 3 years later and i'm still waiting.
HBO and the Game of Thrones producers have already said ending the series with movies isn't going to happen.
Given that one of the main underlying motivations of both the books and show is blowing up the preconceptions and tropes of epic fantasy literature, I'm increasingly wondering if we're going to get the neat happy ending that this all seems to lead to with dragons and the Red God vs the walkers.
From GRRM's point of view, we're all Sansa, on a journey from honor, knights, ladies and flowers to blood, death, betrayal and all the reality of war and life. I wonder if the fans can take a non-happy ending, especially the show-only portion.

I'm anticipating a stable ending, where the main storyline -- the disruption of Westeros's society and the impending Winter -- is dealt with and a status quo is returned.
Honestly, the only way I see the first part happening is if Dany successfully claims the Iron Throne. The whole reason all of the warring came about was because none of the major houses of Westeros was happy with another house sitting in the throne. With the Targaryeans effectively being a neutral force, they're pretty much the only house that the others can tolerate lording over them.
That, and with the North being dealt with however it's going to be dealt with, I see Rob Snow rebuilding and restructuring the Night's Watch into what it once was... or maybe something better.
Neither of which necessary equates a "happy ending," but one where the realms return to a semblance of stability and normalcy. Possibly with magic once again being welcomed with open arms, but I'm kinda doubting that personally.

I'm really expecting for dragons to die in some "shocking" situation. Maybe they build a new dragonpit and due to a building mishap roof collapses on them
You can't say the wait has not been entertaining though.
I've thought about this a lot and I share your fears, but this thought reassures me:
1. The books are compelling.
2. This is because GRRM knows how to 'hook' the reader. While he does give devastating blows, he always hooks a little promise on to them to drag you forward.
3. All stories start with 'the ways things are now', then there is a journey, then the stories end with 'the way things will be from now'. GRRM knows this.
4. The reason the story keeps coming back to Dany is that she has some function in the story. Else why do we spend so much time with her?
5. The ending has to square all these points. I think that points to, if not a 'happy' ending, an ending where the world was better than when it began.
