Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

yeah, I thought it was "the sanctuary moon of Endor", but for convenience's sake we just shorten the wooded globe to "Endor".

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

You know I always wondered what that "sanctuary" part was all about...

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

They probably have a Quasimodo.

I was thinking of the scene in the beginning when the non-stolen shuttle is approaching the DS, but I could be wrong.

No, that one drops out of a Star Destroyer IIRC. The approach shot of Tydirium is the one with the mysterious planet/other moon in the background.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

I think "sanctuary" was just their way of saying the moon was orbiting really really far away from the main planet (which is why we never see it nearby).

Although I think as a kid I used to always assume the big world we see IS the main planet of Endor, and the moon they landed on was either out of shot or on the other side of the planet or something. Just because the Death Star was already supposed to be moon-sized, and the world it was orbiting absolutely dwarfed it.

It's in both scenes. After Vader's shuttle drops out, there's a shot looking back of it flying away from the Star Destroyers. It's in that shot, and it appears to be the same vaguely Mars-like planet/moon that's in the first shot of the Tydirium in the part where Han says to "fly casual".

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Speaking of Jedi, here's raw, deleted footage where the Emperor ordered Moff Jerjerrod to destroy Endor if the Rebel attack on the Imperial shield generator succeeded. I kinda wish they'd left this in the completed scene because it helps reinforce what an evil bastard Palpatine is. Plus, Jerjerrod was kind of a cool officer and I wish we'd seen a few more moments of him. The film editors weren't very kind to his character.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

^ It's a chilling exchange, but it raises the question of why they didn't do that. Is there a scene which addresses that?

I don't think so. Surely no scene that I can remember watching or reading about over the years.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

It's more chilling when there's no music or background music and it's just the Emperor talking

The scene is in the novel of the movie, although to me it just adds a fairly useless layer of jeopardy to the story and it's better off without it.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Wasn't there supposed to be a subplot showing that Jerjerrod was a Rebel sympathizer? Or am I misremembering?

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

I thought there was a subplot where he tried to help the Von Trapps escape over the Alps?

According to Wookiepedia:

in earlier drafts his role was substantially larger, owing to the fact that he functioned as the Emperor's "secret agent," operating behind Vader's back to further the Emperor's plans. In these versions of the script, Vader kills Jerjerrod for his subterfuge.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Going to depend on what the script calls for. I still believe there is going to be a healthy helping of CGI in this movie, even before the Ford injury.
I don't think that was ever in question. They're definitely planning on doing more in-camera practical work than the prequels had, but I think that anything ILM supplies will be CGI. They sold off their model shop in 2006, and I can't imagine them reinvesting in building one up from scratch.

One of the video games appeared to take the same approach: the world we see is the planet Endor, and it has a moon.

What did this moon look like from space, you ask?

Trees. It looked like fucking trees. :guffaw:

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Regarding the CG thing, I hope it isn't like what happened with Indy IV, where they promised there wouldn't be too much CG early in production, but the final product had a lot of CG anyway(Although not as much as Star Wars).

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

^The amount of CG is in itself irrelevant. What matters is the use and quality of CG. After all, crappy practical effects and crappy puppets are just as crappy as crappy CGI....wow, I don't think I've ever used that word so many times in one sentence before...or will again...

Point it, the monkeys and gophers weren't rubbish *because* they were CG. They were just rubbish in general. On the flip side, there's plenty of really good CG in that film.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

The CG face-swapping thing is perfectly fine for action scenes or distant shots (although even then it usually still looks a bit fake), but I definitely don't think it's ready for close ups.

I just don't want to be watching Han throughout Ep VII and wondering the entire time why something looks a bit "off" with him. Or wondering at which points the body double took over or when it's Harrison himself. Because I already know I'm one of those people that will be distracted by that kind of thing.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Kevin Smith just posted to his Facebook fan page that J.J. let him take a look at the Episode VII set. After signing the standard non-disclosure agreement he posted a selfie of himself weeping a tear of joy and giving a thumbs up at how good he thinks this movie's going to be.

Like Kevin Smith or not, he's a colossal Star Wars fan and understands the franchise, and if he's this excited and happy about Episode VII that's a good thing.
