Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Wow. I really liked Looper (even if it was a bit overrated by the critics), but Johnson also directed many of the best Breaking Bad episodes as well, so for that reason alone I'm looking forward to seeing what he does with SW.

Kind of surprised JJ ruled out directing the sequels so soon though, considering this was such a dream job of his. I would have thought he'd be looking forward to plotting out and making an entire new trilogy, and not just the first movie (unless all he really wanted to do was just direct Harrison Ford in a SW movie).

Same here. I loved Looper and some of those BB episodes he directed were some of the best. It's an impressive hire and one that I could have seen GL make (he liked those kind of directors). I'm glad JJ won't be helming the entire run.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Direct the first and then leave the rest to others, who does he think he is, Lucas?

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

I bet Kathleen Kennedy made those decisions. She is the Feige of Star Wars, save for the fact that she has been involved with the most important films of our generation from E.T on. I trust her. Though I despised Looper, I know that the best directors to get for Star Wars would be filmmakers that are young, are fans, and have a lot of drive and passion, the same type of determination that Lucas had as a 28 year-old making the first film. I also liked the tangible quality of the SFX in Looper, but the makeup was atrociatious. But ILM will take care of all of that. No worries there. JJ is doing the first film of the new era.. it will set the tone.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

I'm also pretty shocked that JJ Abrams is leaving after just the first movie. I figured he'd do at least the main trilogy, while other directors handle the spin-off.
I haven't seen Breaking Bad yet, but I really enjoyed Looper, so based off of that I'm happy about Johnson directing EPVIII.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

If only he'd ditch the first one, too, I'd be truly happy.

But, in all fairness, he does do interesting jobs setting ideas up. He's just fucking pathetic at endings.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Kathleen Kennedy doesn't have a perfect track record (who in Hollywood does? Even the legendary greats had at least one or two misfires) but I trust her judgment and guidance during the new Sequel Trilogy and the making of the standalone films. If they have serious issues it probably won't be because she didn't care or dropped the ball.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Yeah I definitely like the idea of having different directors for each movie, as opposed to the situation we saw with the prequels (although to be fair, I don't think Lucas's direction is nearly as bad as people say it is, and actually think a lot of the camerawork and editing in those movies was really damn good).

Plus it kinda makes sense to have JJ's fun and flashy style for what will seemingly be the big "send off" movie for the OT cast, and then for the followup movies that focus more on the new cast they can switch to a slightly different and edgier style with a new director.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

The problem wasn't that George directed all three Prequels. It's that he'd forgotten how to successfully direct human beings and human emotions at some point between the OT and the beginning of principal photography on Episode I in 1997.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

I think this goes in line for Lucas's original ideas for Star Wars that of handling the franchise to multiple directors as he did in ESTB.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

I thought the plan all along was to have a different director for each movie, so this doesn't come as a surprise. I saw Abrams as a director for hire, not the guy running the new trilogy.

Exactly. Because it's the first film out of the gate, we will probably get the clearest idea of the overall look and feel from his film, but the others will still be somewhat different from that.

I hated Looper but most of my problems with it have to do with the fact that it's got an idiotic time travel plot and that it wants us to believe it's smarter than it is. But what I do like is the fact the director is young, and most likely passionate for the craft. Lucas was so caught up with green screens and CGI and I really do think it affected the look and feel of the prequels (which I still enjoyed).

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

JJ really didn't want to move to the UK to film EP7 and had to be heavily courted by Kennedy, so I'm not surprised he's only doing one. He didn't want to have to move his kids.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

The OT had three different directors and from what I've seen and heard over the years they turned out just fine. This is no biggie. Letting somebody else take a shot in the chair can make a franchise more interesting and even exciting.

"Forgotten" implies that he knew at one point. I don't see any proof of that in ANH.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

American Graffiti, then. Even ANH has better-developed and warmer, more human characters than AOTC.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Sometimes I'm wondering if those "Why xy is perfect for this and that" articles are part of the campaign.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

They are probably more like poor attempts at reading the tea leaves while sucking up to the studios.

If the mechanics of time travel and trying to look smart were actually the point of the film, Bruce Willis (acting as the voice of the writer/director) wouldn't have dismissively ridiculed it with looping straws in the diner scene. It's just there as a McGuffin for telling the story of how you would deal with killing your older self and escaping your younger self, respectively, and of becoming a better person or making the same mistakes again.
