"Dumb and Dumber To" Trailer

Flying Spaghetti Monster

Not too, too long ago, when the rights to this property were changing hands, CNN said the chances of this sequel being finished were remote.

Well, now it's here. It's now thing to see photos from the set, but seeing the trailer makes it feel real.

I never trust comedy trailers because nine times out of ten, you've just seen every funny gag in the film.

I'm looking forward to it. I love the first film, and from the trailer, it looks like little has changed in 20 years. I have high hopes for this movie.

It can't possibly be worse than Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd. At least one would hope.

I'm a bit apprehensive about it. If i do go see it i am going to have to go in there with a very open mind, to at least alleviate the amount of disappointment it might bring.

It's just silly fun. Two complete and utter idiots go on a journey together, and we get to view the world through their lens. It's not for everybody, I agree, but it was a fun movie, and this one looks just as fun.

And if those are their best gags it doesn't bode well at all.

Agreed. Something felt off about it. Dated maybe?

Not dated, but it felt "wrong." I smiled at few parts, but my brain was telling me the whole time that something wasn't right. It seemed like Carrey and Daniels were just acting like the characters in the first film, instead of being them, and the trailer kind of carries that same feeling -- Lloyd would never be smart enough to pull off a 20-year gag, for example.

The "dusty vagina" gag really fell flat for me, too, and it felt entirely too reminiscent of gross-out Farrelly comedy. They had a leash on Dumb & Dumber because it was their first film and New Line was pretty strict through the editing process. If you watch the uncensored cut of Dumb & Dumber, it's really disjointed, a lot darker, and just takes things too far -- everything just feels "off," like this trailer.

Dumb and Dumber is one of my favorite movies. I will definitely see this sequel, but I will refrain from getting my hopes up. For one thing sequels are rarely as good as the first, especially when it comes to comedies, and comedy trailers are never very good at portraying the film for what it really is. But I will give it a chance.

You make some very good points.. in the original, I could really picture Harry and Lloyd existing somehow, but the twenty-year gag feels like a writer trying to write those characters. Restraint, and something that pulls it all back just a bit, is important. Even in spoof film like Airplane, there's something (like the combined setting or a general limit on the kinds of tropes that will be satirized) can be a limiting factor.

The "dusty vagina" gag you mentioned is a perfect example.. it exists in more of a straight spoof. The original film only went into these kinds of simply spoof gags on occasion, but the real appeal of the film was the outside chance that Harry and Lloyd were real people. One of the funniest gags of the original film is the parrot/ blind kid gag. Outlandish, yet believeable

Yeah, good points all around, both of you. To me, it feels as though it's too drawn out, which also feels like it missed the point.
