I think I should have been more forthcoming by stating that I don't consider the prequels and especially "Revenge of the Shit" as canon. Anakin Childkiller was really the most idiotic thing George Lucas ever came up with!

I assume it´s considered worse killing younglings than not preventing an entire planet being blown to bits - guess there were no children on Alderaan 
Just a little reminder (I really don't want this beautiful thread to go off-topic): It was Governor Tarkin who suggested to destroy Alderaan as a test. Look at Vader how his head jerked when he sensed what Governor Tarkin was about to propose - looked to me as if even him hadn't considered such cruelty as imaginable. And for whatever reasons, Tarkin had been holding "Vader's leash", so there was little Vader could do preventing it.
