Cosmos - With Neil deGrasse Tyson

Boy, this thread has been an enjoyable read.

One side labels folks as "deniers" and attacks the other side for labeling "warmists". What hypocrites.

CO2 scrubbers I say...
http://www.technologyreview.com/news/412439/scrubbing-co2-cheaply/

I'd much rather the government put these on all coal and gas plants rather than invest in "green" companies that were doomed to fail.

I'd much rather see this tha elminate entire towns because "someone" thinks coal is a bad thing. The thought that that is acceptable to anyone is frightening.

I'm a "sky is falling denier".

Have we warmed? Sure. But it you make conclusions based on that short window of data (since the industrial revolution started I guess) then I don't see how you can discount at leveling temperature over the past 20 years, as the amount of CO2 pumped into the atmo has increased. But hey, that doesn't "fit the argument".

See the problem with this whole thing isn't that we all disagree that using renewable energy sources is a good thing. It is. But... the techology isn't there yet to make it feasable on a large scale. Until that happens, making the transition isn't going to happen... PERIOD... no matter how many people scream. No matter how much more money they take from me to "fix" it.

When hydrogen cell cars become affordable, I will buy one.

When electric cars that equate to more that a golf cart become affordable, I will buy one. I really want a Tesla, but 80 grand is a little steep.

Oil comsuption isn't going away either. Look at everything around you. 99 percent of it is made by or using oil.

All I can say is nearly every climate model since they started climate models have been proven wrong. That's not a good track record.

Not my fault.

But hey, we have a new study, release with a new show, at the same time France says we have to act now or the human race will go extinct.

But hey, NDT knows that Venus was just like Earth so... really folks? Jesus...

If you're fine with the Climate change popoganda that is "COSMOS" then fine... I personally think it's a far cry from the orgional. Too many blatent lies in this one.

All to further an agenda.

I'll stick to "Though the Wormhole" ... they don't preach to anyone. They provide all different views in an intellegent manner. The last one was fantastic. It discussed the thought that poverty might be genetic. If you haven't seen it, I recommend it. Along with all the other episodes of this intelligent series. (Oh, and it nararrated by a professional, but a mundane mono-toned activest)

I've watched Carl's show at least 5 times from start to finish. The last 2 on the 'ole computer.

I won't watch the lastest imitation again.

You know what I'd love to see? It's a struggle to get the average citizen to buy a hybrid or electric car until the tech is more mature and reliable (I know, its aaaalmost there!)

But in the meantime, I think it would be awesome for big cities to ditch their internal cumbustion bus fleets in favor of full-electrics. Same for city taxi cabs. These are vehicles that operate within relatively small areas with frequent opportunity to recharge. It would lead by example.

THE SKY IS FALLING! THE SKY IS FALLING!

That's also a big turn-off.
I don't think that really anyone is anywhere close to saying that. Maybe in the worst case scenarios, things will be incredibly shitty. Especially for people in poorer countries. But the world isn't ending and we aren't going extinct. Pointing that out isn't any more alarmist than point out that a boat is headed for an iceberg and we can avoid it. But in our case, we have idiots shouting out that the iceberg doesn't exist and other people are saying that we don't even need to worry about the iceberg, but we keep getting closer and no one is steering us away.

The iceberg is going to melt before we hit it, so there's really nothing to worry about. :p

Here in Cincinnati, the Metro bus service has been gradually phasing in hybrid electric-diesel buses for the past several years, partly with federal funding earmarked specifically for that purpose. Although currently they make up less than 8 percent of the bus fleet. But I gather a number of cities are doing the same, including Los Angeles, though it's a few years behind Cincinnati. New York City, on the other hand, has apparently stopped buying hybrid buses and is scrapping some of the ones it already has.

Only one has the facts on their side. Much like how Creationists label anyone who accepts Evolution as Evolutionists as if it were a religion when it isn't.

No, I'm sure burning a substance into a belching black smoke and dumping it into the air by the tons every minute is a *good* thing for everyone.

See the problem with this whole thing isn't that we all disagree that using renewable energy sources is a good thing. It is. But... the techology isn't there yet to make it feasable on a large scale. You know, the thing is we have to start somewhere and sometime. Efficient and inexpensive alternative means of generating power for our cities and cars isn't going to just come out of nowhere if we don't get on the train at an earlier station. We have to start at the bottom and work our way up. Do you think the first automobiles ever made were powerboxes of efficiency, speed, and greatness? No, they were tin cans powered by a tiny motor driving a single wheel on the body. It's taken over a century of improvement to get to the cars we have today mechanically. Taking those original designs and improving on the way the engine, transmission and drivetrain were designed and built. Ironing out flaws and coming up with ways to better deliver power to more than one wheels. (Behold: The invention of the differential!)

So if you don't think we should adopt alternative means of generating power now because these things aren't very good yet then, um, how do you expect them to BECOME good if we never use them more to iron out the kinks and develop better ways to create them? Do you realize how far behind America is when it comes to the nuclear power industry because we've not built a new nuclear power reactor in decades?

We have to start somewhere, man. We need to focus more on building up our alternative energy resources NOW rather than just waiting for the technology to slowly get better over time as people and organizations with scraps of crash struggle to come up with better and better ways or, in the case of America, waiting for other countries to surpass us, yet again, in these areas making us look that much more weaker, irrelevant, ignorant and reluctant to change.

Complete ignorant bullshit, as usual, Yankoff.

Pretty rough language for a Vice Admiral.

You're being insubordinate.

Stand up straight! Suck in that gut! I want a sharp, crisp salute!

If we're going by ranks, then you should be nice to the 6th highest Fleet Admiral on the board (which would be me).

I want you to swab the deck, and in the process, memorize these facts:

I'm the second-most ranked person on the entire board. I want BOTH of you to lick my clothes clean and make me a delicious pizza!

I'll just leave this here.

My pizza will be vegetarian.

Board ranks measure post count, not character.

Which is lucky for him, because if it did, I'd probably be General Jesus or something.

I prefer the Jeffrey Hunter version of Jesus. He had such beautiful eyes... :adore:

I liked Jeffrey Hunter. So sad that he passed, with such a great future ahead of him. Still, my favorite Jesus is Robert Powell. Just something about him that made it seem like there was something greater to him, something unknowable. I loved his portrayal.
