Will there be another spinoff?

OK, it's not the greatest example but even after the cancellation of it's other two spinoffs (due to low ratings) and being not quite as popular as it was before, CSI is still getting a new spinoff with Patricia Arquette called CSI: Cyber.


Now, Doctor Who is still popular of course but the spinoffs mainly from the RTD era-Torchwood and Sarah Jane Adventures-like CSI's-are no more. Torchwood mainly because of Miracle Day not being a huge success, and SJA because of the death of the lead actress.




There have been some speculation about a series featuring Vestra, Jenny and Strax (Apart from miniepisodes and the Strax 'briefings' of course) or even River Song or UNIT. Could a new spinoff be viable eventually? Or should the BBC just focus on the current show?
 
The only spin-off I really want can probably never happen. Because it wouldn't be different enough from Doctor Who.

The Paul McGann mini-series, set during the Time War and a slight... no, make that a complete rewrite on how his Doctor goes out.

I'm not saying "The Night of the Doctor" was bad by any means. Certainly exciting enough to recapture my enthusiasm for the Eighth Doctor. But clearly its 7 minutes would be an unsatisfactory ending to a weekly series. A random accidental death - making its lead character a crash victim. Almost as much as "These are the Voyages..." was an unsuitable way to kiss Enterprise goodbye really.

But that just exposes how it was a surprise for completists, showing the missing 8-9 regeneration... with the creation of a guest starring role for John Hurt, the main priority.
 
Yeah, you could not have another Dr. Who series on TV, but a webseries with Paul Mcgann could work as an internet extra to the main show. It worked with Night of the Doctor why not on a more ongoing bases.
 
The Jack Harkness and River Song Adventures. Both John Barrowman and Alex Kingston want to do it, so why isn't happening?! :p
 
I have little interest in a regular spinoff series that follows specific characters. But, an anthology series that did stories about different past companions, Doctors, and other stories would be great.

That probably wouldn't be cost-effective and maybe not bring in the viewers either without a set cast. Maybe it would better as a regular series of specials. At any rate, I don't expect that'll work out.

I would love to see the two of them team up!!!!

Failing that either: a series focusing on River's exploits as a futuristic archaeologist, or one where Jack leads a small team of modern day humans out into space on a ship of his own. Although as I write this that would actually be a good set up to get River and Jack working together, imagine all the sexy adventures they'd have!
 
I doubt there'd be another spin-off under Moffat. Moffat has already indicated he feels he has a full plate with both Doctor Who and Sherlock. And regardless of what one thinks of his organizational skills, I think we can agree that if he has difficulty with getting one show out of an annual basis and another bi-annually, then another is really not that good an idea.

Spin-offs were RTD's thing anyway, and he was quoted saying had he stayed in charge there would be as many spin-offs possible, indicating he would "milk the franchise for all it's worth." Moffat has shown no interest in doing a spin-off so we'll probably only see one if the next showrunner has RTD's fascination with the concept.

While spin-offs are nice, they aren't really necessary. Just do a good show and I'll be happy.
 
I'd still like to see the Jack and River show.

Ya know, that could actually be a really good Animated Series, IMHO. Sort of like a Companion Chronicles

Torchwood: Victoria (Jack, River, Vastra, Jenny and Strax)
 
I'd be happy with a spinoff. I think I would be most interested in Vastra and the Gang, more than River--who I'm bored with.

And I'd like one that wouldn't sort of tread on the toes of Doctor Who. That's why I really enjoyed Torchwood, especially it's later seasons (excluding the abomination). It was something different.

That said, I'm also fine with no spin off. I'm not greedy. There's plenty of stuff to occupy my interest in between seasons.
 
River and Jack would be fun, but only as a one off.

The Paternoster Gang has more potential, but I still think anything beyond 6x30 minute episodes a series might be too much. Also I don't know if Neve and Dan would be up for the intensive makeup sessions.

I think it was more due to the fact RTD decided to leave the US due to his partner being ill. But now its stuck in limbo.

As I recall, RTD always intended to leave Torchwood after Miracle Day, his hopes that he could turn the reigns over to American producers who would continue the show on their own for a few more seasons. But Miracle Day underperformed, and Torchwood is now in the exact same situation it would have been in had RTD stayed in America.
 
I too hope for a one-off Eighth Doctor adventure. Either something web based spilt into smaller chunks that equal an episode, or a extra-long special like Tennant did in his final year. Or even a traditional four 25 minutes episode serial, just cos.

It's a shame Night of the Doctor came out so close to the end of Smith's run because now no one wants to take the spotlight off of Capaldi's run with more McGann.

I'd be up for a McGann mini but I don't know that you'd need to show his departure. Just a series of adventures throughout this incarnation. Why would you need to see the end of this version of The Doctor? Many, if not most, TV series end without showing the death of their lead characters.

Besides, I've no real difficulties with how Eight died. Was it any worse than his immediate 2 predecessors? Or than the first doctor dying of old age? He died trying to save someone. That's totally Doctor-ish, in my book.
 
I'd go further, never mind six and seven, I'd say it was a better, or certainly less convoluted) way to go out than nine ten or eleven!
