Yeah, I did it that way to imitate "The Cage.". It's always looked to me like it was Jefferies intention that the tour olift fit into the cylinder in the back; rotated the way we have it, it would poke out through the hull.
I remember reading somewhere that the original bridge design was supposed to have the turbolift in the rear so that it would line up with the external shaft but was changed for filming reasons. When they filmed the Captain in the chair at an angle, they wanted the turbolift doors in the background in order to see people using the lift. Not sure if there's any truth to that or not it makes sense.
