Sure it can. The two Abrams films were entertaining and fun. I can think of a lot of movies that were supposed be entertaining and fun and turned out to be neither. In fact, while neither was the best movie I saw in the year it came out, they were certainly among the most fun films I've seen at the cinema in years--and they continue to be fun every time I watch them again (which is more often than a lot of other movies--including the rest of the Trek movie collection, along with the TV episodes). So, yes, things could, in fact, get considerably worse.

Wow, Orci is incredibly Hot in that pic

Examining what's been said, so far, about many complaints, Orci's opinion was over-ridden, he'll now be the one making those decisions, if he gets it.

He's got a different set of Up and Coming Writers he's working with. If he doesn't fall down behind the Camera, this could actually be a great Flick, especially plotwise.

I completely support an Orci-Directed effort, I like him on a personal level even.

No kidding. If I had to pick someone to take over based on past Trek work, it would be Ron Moore. Still, I'd like some new blood injected, preferably with no affiliation with Bad Robot.

Strange then, that he appears to get so bent out of shape when fans criticize his work....

At this point it would be foolish to mess with success. I say let him direct the movie, and let it stand on its own merits. :)

How about hiring a first-time director?

Didn't you hear? They're using Voyager's Threshold script as the basis for the third movie...

He's someone who has been in the thick of things since the original concept, so it's not like he's unprepared. Plus, he has J.J. putting his two cents in for him, and I would consider that to be the best endorsement, overall. So I think he'll do a fine job, should he get the Director's chair.

Why can't they get a "big-name" director? Someone well known to the public, but who hasn't worked in Trek before?

    EDIT:

Talk about a track record!

Luckily, his "trek record" alone is freak anomaly (a positive one). Still, I think rookie directors should start with something small. Like Alex Kurtzman. "People Like Us" was a pleasant surprise.

I think the high ratings have less to do with the scripts and more with everything else like the cast chemistry, Abrams' energetic direction, ect. It's a case of a film that manages to be charming despite clunky scripts. I just don't personally find it all that charming, hence why I'm less forgiving.

As for that "fuck you" from Orci, my favorite bit of that internet fight was Orci daring fans to write a better script. He shouldn't bluff like that. Smug guys like him and Lindelof should be lucky that they became buddies with Abrams otherwise they wouldn't have made it this far.

Someone making a major motion picture their directorial debut? That's never failed miserably before.

In this instance I don't think Abrams and Co would let him fail*.

    * Definition of "failure" subject to personal opinion and/or box office returns, as always. :D
