Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Is anyone else wondering about Carrie Fisher? I can pretty much imagine Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill slipping back into their roles but the only things I associate with Carrie Fisher these days is comedy and self-parody. I haven't seen her serious acting, or seen her "play it straight," as it were. I'm not saying Leia was ever some grand dramatic performance but I'm having trouble imagining it.

I was having trouble imagining it as well, especially when it comes to her playing the softer and more maternal Leia we saw in ROTJ. But the character was actually a lot more feisty and sarcastic than that in the first two movies, and I think there's probably a good chance Fisher could still play that version pretty well.

At least that's the way I hope they go, since that's the Leia I (and probably most people) always preferred anyway.

Judging by her comments over years regarding Jedi and having to wear that ridiculous iron bikini, I think Fisher prefers that version of Leia too. ;)

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Empire Carrie was my favorite version of Leia to be sure. I didn't dislike her in Jedi but she as an actress was in the middle of substance abuse problems at the time the third film was produced and all things considered she delivered an acceptable performance (albeit underwhelming much of the time). I always wished Leia's reaction when Luke tells her they're siblings and Darth Vader is their father would have been a bit more dramatic and emotive, but it is what it is.

It'll just be nice to have Leia back on the big screen.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

The first episodes in both trilogies featured an older mentor character dying. I wouldn't be surprised if the sequel trilogy does the same thing. That kind of implies that Luke would be the ideal candidate for such a fate, but perhaps in this case it might be Han instead.

I can picture a scenario where it seems Luke is about to die and Han sacrifices himself to save him. Han's last words: "That's one more you owe me, kid."
I'm hoping it's "Kiss Leia for me". :p

Yeah she definitely seemed pretty zoned out through most of the movie. But even then, there weren't many moments when she was given the kind of peppy, smartassy dialogue we saw in ANH and ESB to begin with. I wonder if that's because they were trying to soften her up to make the romance with Han believable or something.

Much as I love ROTJ, it's a shame Han and Leia don't seem to act like the Han and Leia we loved from the previous movies.

Han seemed somewhat blunted - I've always chalked that up to the evolution of his relationship with Leia and having new priorities in life. His Generalship being a sign of that.

I collected on that hundred bucks this week.

That is hilarious! And I bet you're not the only one who made a similar bet. ;)
I still can't sort of believe that Disney bought Star Wars and now a new ST will exist. I know it's happening, it's filming, there is even proof. But this whole thing is still very surreal. I would have been one of the guys betting against it.

Also, spending a year in the dark void of carbon freeze can change a guy a little. ;) The differences in Han's behavior in Jedi compared to how he carried himself in the previous films has been attributed by some to personality-altering aftereffects of his disturbing limbo in carbonite. Harrison definitely played Han to greater humorous effect in the final movie of the OT than he ever did in the first two episodes.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

The same thing happened with Indy in the third movie of that series. Whatever edge he had in the first two movies was completely gone in that one.

It's a good thing Last Crusade was such a fun and great storyline with Sean Connery along for the ride, because Indy himself sure wasn't as gritty and textured as he'd been in the first two films. He was actually a darker and more serious character in the most recent movie, demonstrating that Harrison's approach to an aging character like Indy had changed in the years after Crusade.

^ So how are they going to explain Boba surviving being eaten by the Sarlacc?

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Well, the movie did describe the Sarlacc as slowly digesting its prey over a very, very long period of time, prolonging the dying agony of the victims in its belly. Boba wasn't dead, just knocked dizzy by his high-speed fall into the maw of the creature. Later he used his weapons on his armor to cut and blast his way out.

At least that's the now-decanonized EU explanation.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

To be fair, he was wearing a heavily armoured sealed environment suit that's positivity brimming with all manner of weaponry and that thing is clearly said to have a VERY slow digestive process. I'm sure once he came to, it'd just be a matter of figuring out which way is up and start blasting/hacking/burning/kersploding/disintegrating until you see daylight.

Honestly, the hard part would be trying not to vomit inside that helmet from all the rotting, 500 year old bantha meat. :ack:
