World Premiere: "Late Night Double Feature"

It's that time of year again: Chris Mihm's latest independent film, The Late Night Double Feature, will be premiering next Saturday. Most of you know by now that Chris has been producing these independent homages to the B-Movies of yore (and mine) for about nine years now. This year's movie, as the title implies, features two stories: "X: The Fiend From Beyond Space" and "The Wall People."

I'll be heading out there on Friday to attend the pre-premiere party (and hopefully meeting OmahaStar this time). Last year I got to be on the podcast and I was interviewed by the local ABC affiliate-- what wonders await me this year?

If you're a fan of the old drive-in movies of the 50s, I highly recommend that you buy these movies. You'll get some great entertainment and you'll be supporting a top-notch independent creator.

As predicted, I headed out to Minnesota this past Friday morning to see the premiere of Late Night Double Feature. What wasn't predicted was that the airport shuttle would drop me off at the wrong terminal and that I would miss my flight. No problem. I love slapstick. Thanks to some improvisation, a lot of running, and the help of the American Airlines staff, I managed to make it only four hours later than I intended. Still in plenty of time for the pre-premiere party on Friday night.

The party was great. We had a live podcast, we had dinner (including Uncle John's Burger Dogs-- a once-fictional foodstuff of the Mihmiverse that now exists in real life), we had photo ops, we had the song stylings of Shannon McDonough-- and her friend Elvis. Yes, that Elvis. I know he lives down the Cape, so he was probably on that flight that I missed. There was also the live presentations of this year's Mihmiverse Awards-- and I actually got one (The "Good Sport Award"), which was very sweet, in both senses of the word. I also got to see the friends I made last year, and made several new ones. And I also got to meet OmahaStar this year, and I must say that he is a very pleasant fellow.

The movie was great, to no one's surprise (except maybe Chris). The premiere was held in the historic Heights Theater, a beautifully restored old theater, complete with one of those giant organs (I can't think of the name right now); and this year we had an organ player. Buying popcorn and finding a seat was an operatic experience. The first half of the movie, "X: The Fiend From Beyond Space" was a space horror adventure in the vein of Chris's previous movies Destination: Outer Space and Attack of the Moon Zombies. The second half was a bit different, though, and it surprised me. "The Wall People" was a more spooky, twisty and turny story, more of a pyschological thriller, that keeps you wondering what's real, what's going to happen next, and if it is really over. I think it is Chris's best script to date. Both of these stories feature the return of characters from previous movies, expanding the mythos.

The DVDs are now on sale, I think, or will be soon. I highly recommend you get them all. You'll be getting some great entertainment and you'll be supporting a fantastic independent creator-- one of the best examples that we don't have to rely on gray corporations for our movies, music, and books. People make art.

Doubt I'm spelling this right, but ... Worlitzer. Last year was the only year we didn't have a player. This year was a new guy. As the previous gentleman was rather ... experienced ... I wonder if the new player was his son?

All 9 DVDs are on sale, as well as two of the movies on burned Blu-Ray discs. They all tie in with each other, and each one is just a little stronger than the previous. There is also a spin-off movie The Bequether, a comedy which will hopefully be released later this year. It features several of the regular players, and was written/directed by one Justen Overlander.

Yeah, that looks good. I was invited by Justen to attend that, too, but I couldn't go. I'm looking forward to the DVD. When you say spin-off, does that mean it takes place in the same universe? I wasn't aware of that.
