Into Darkness snubbed for Hugo nomination

I don't see how [...]Frozen can be nominated as they aren't sci-fi.

And yet in the past, the Lord of the Rings movies, Pan's Labyrinth, and a season of Game of Thrones won the award, with the Harry Potter movies also nominated. Fantasy is fair game.

The Hugo awards, last I checked, weren't based on box office numbers. If they were, there'd be no reason for nominations. We'd just look at the numbers and hand the award to the highest-grossing film. Nor does box-office = quality. "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" grossed over a billion dollars. Does that mean it's better than all of the Star Trek movies and among the greatest movies ever made? If not, then I'm not sure of the point of posting box office numbers.

No effect on what?

On most people who dislike the films, and state that the number won't mean anything about popularity and quality. There are some who could see the film win an Oscar or two, and deny that it has any merit whatsoever. In short, anyone who has plans to go into detail about why the film is a quality film, well made, and popular, should just save their breath, because it will be ineffective.

^ Anyone who goes into detail about the film being "quality" and "well made" is probably wasting their breath, true -- unless they have some arguments that directly relate to same, of the kind that would actually interest Hugo voters for example, instead of trying to substitute profit in their place -- because those qualities are extremely obviously independent of box office numbers (as Hober Mallow correctly points out*) or even of Rotten Tomatoes scores, which are very far from scientific but which some people have a habit of citing like the Tablets of Testimony. That they are popular is not at issue, although the type, degree, trends, localities and long-term likely durability of said popularity certainly are.

The shorthand version of this is: "As discussions of quality go, don't bother telling me how much money it made. Vanilla Ice made money. The Star Wars prequels made money. Many terrible things make money."

The Hugo Awards has always nominated from the STAR TREK brand, over the years, hasn't it? Maybe they just wanted a refreshing change of pace, is all. This movie was clearly a set-up for whatever's going to happen in the third movie, anyway. Not getting a nomination is nothing to take humbrage at, in my opinion ...

When I saw the Hugo Noms yesterday, after being excited some favorites were on there, I admit my first thought was "I can't wait to see the snub flame wars that erupt from STID not being on there."

The film was not only a financial success, but also a critical success, just as the first one was, but again, that won't matter, so there's no point in going over it at length.

My comment was mostly tongue in cheek so I probably should have used a winking smiley, I'll admit. I don't actually care if something wins an award or not. I only care about whether I enjoy it.

That bit of criteria really is the only thing that should matter to anyone. I don't care about award shows (of any stripe), either. There have been critically acclaimed films that I have thought of as garbage and conversely, some panned films that I really like.

Since we're still talking about every other Trek movie ever made, I have no doubt in twenty years we'll still be talking about Into Darkness.

What's the problem with Iron Man 3?

There was nothing really wrong with it beyond I found it instantly forgettable (much like The Avengers) the moment I walked out of the theater.

I burned my Into Darkness Blu-ray the moment I found out it wasn't nominated for the Hugo.

^You're not supposed to burn your Into Darkness Blu-ray until it's more popular than Jesus.

I just can't like something that the Hugo selection committee doesn't. What would people think if they came into my house and saw a sci-fi movie not nominated for a Hugo in my collection?!? I would be ostracized and then cast out of the community!

Then you'd better check this list of all the winners and nominees for best dramatic presentation, and toss all the other films that don't show up.
