The 70s. The Apocalypse film will take place in the 80s.
Anyway, unless they send Kitty herself back in time (instead of her memories), she'll have nothing to be sent to.
And the problem with that is?
Explain that movie to me.

There was never any chance of this being a Kitty Pryde/Ellen Page headline film. For many more reasons than the popularity of Wolverine. This film began as a sequel to The First Class. The intention was always to focus primarily on its cast and take place in the 1970s. That stayed as it evolved to using the Days of Future past comic as a inspiration, never a direct adaptation. Using the concept of a future X-Man traveling into their younger body gave few options.
They could send her back into her mom's body, and call the film X-Men: Freaky Fridays of Future Past.bbjeg said:Ellen Page was born in 1987 and the movie takes place in the 80's.

My point is we should be happy Ellen Page is even in the movie and while not probably a huge role its a critical one to the story. She herself said she never expected to play Kitty again. Given the way The Last Stand ended and the direction of the prequels it seemed unlikely for years. Also its great she has returned at all. Her career has grown a lot since than. There must have been something that appealed to her.
Could have cast Scott Bakula as the time traveler.

They send her back in time instead of her memories?![]()
When I found out they were adapting 'Days of Future Past' I was really excited that Ellen Page would get to headline an X-Men film. I know she definitely could have carried the film as well, and to suggest she couldn't is a bit unfair to her I think.

Then why not just send Professor X or Magneto back?
Specifically speaking, those two were dead. Why did Kitty Pryde go back in time in the comics? Why not Xavier or Magneto then?

More generally, the excuse for sending Kitty back into her younger body in the comics was that her younger self was the X-Men's newest recruit, and hadn't been trained to block psionic attacks yet.

My only point is this. Some things would have to be changed from the comics no matter who was sent back in time. Therefore, they're only limited by the imagination of the writers and a consideration of what would make the most interesting story. I fully understand that Ellen Page is probably not the person they'd select to star this film. However, the reason for not choosing her has nothing to do with the rules of time travel because those rules are just as changeable as the person to send back in time.
Ultimately, the writers will tell the story they think is the best story. But there's no inherent reason it couldn't be Kitty Pryde or had to be Logan. Ultimately, it came down to what story they wanted to tell and the rules of time travel accommodate that story.
It could have been anyone other than Wolverine really. I like Wolverine, and I love Jackman's portrayal and find it neat he loves the character enough to keep playing him, but he has his own series of films now. There was no reason they had to make him the star of this film.
