CERN changes house style

"When preparing my Higgs presentation, at first, I had Georgia on my mind," she says.

I like Comic Sans. Never understood that hyped internet nerd rage against it.

I like it for casual use. But I've seen way too much of it, and in inappropriate settings. Never could convince my boss that sending business emails in Comic Sans did not help his credibility as the executive director of an agency. :(

A) What font choice have to do with credibility as executive director?
B) If it's about having "seen way too much of it", why hasn't anyone grown tired of Times New Roman or Arial?

^ Yup. Saw it. Snickered my way through the article. Replied seriously to JR because he made a serious (I think!) comment.

A) Using a cute and casual font that a lot of people make fun of -- especially in a bright color instead of black -- is the email equivalent of showing up at a business mtg in t-shirt and shorts when everyone else is wearing a business suit.

B) I wasn't talking about "anyone", just about myself. I don't tire of Times New Roman because it's so classic. I don't tire of Arial because it's so boring and ubiquitous (but easy to read) that I barely notice it.

I hate today.

I don't know if I would put that sentiment after a harmless April Fools joke coming out of CERN. When someone with a clue puts some thought into it, it can be really entertaining and fun. There are some that have brought smile on my face and made me laugh in moments I wasn't feeling like it. From the tech ones, Google have done some fine work in the past. And the 1 April RFC are really some piece of work, with some really clever ones that are genuinely awesome. So, as irritating as it can be, April Fools is a positive thing in human culture, not something to be hated.

(I don't find the CERN one funny, but anything that irritates the typeface aristocracy is fine by me. ;) )

That aside, I'd like to add to the sentiment and say that I hate all the clueless idiots who make "clever" April Fools jokes that end up costing three zero sums of money in property damage. Get a brain before trying to be funny, please.

The biggest joke is how we didn't finish Superconducting Supercollider.

Large Hadron was just a consolation prize.
