Oh well, at least "Greetings from Earth" gave something back. Some of those establishing shots filmed at Expo '67 were edited into the broadcast version of "Awakening."

I've been a fan of Buck Rogers since 1979, and this is the first I've ever heard of such a scene. The broadcast version on the DVD is exactly the way I remember it.
I hope you find it though, I'd love to see that.
Thanks for the starlog archive link!
any one see the Buck Rogers movie in the theater?

I saw it at a drive in. I barely remember it though. I was about four years old. I remember the opening credits most clearly.
Like the Galactica pilot, it was shot as a TV pilot, but was released theatrically as a movie before the series premiered.

I could swear I remember the Galactica pilot only being released theatrically after the show was already on the air, at least in the US. Are you sure?
From: http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Battlestar_Galactica_(TOS)Yes, the BSG was released theatrically in the U.S. AFTER the series had its run on ABC (it was done prior to the premiere of the 'Galactica 1980' TV series.) It might have been released in Canada and in the European markets prior to BSG's premiere as a TV series in the states.
To defray costs, the three hour premiere was re-cut as a theatrical release. Several weeks before the TV series premiered in America, the series pilot appeared as a two hour film in Canada, Europe and Japan. Opening on July 7, 1978, the theatrical release did quite well, given modest expectations.
