sf/f TV development news - 2013

The CW has ordered another SFF show to pilot. From Deadline:

The CW is staying in the genre/fantasy space with another drama pilot order, to The Messengers, from feature producer Basil Iwanyk (The Clash Of The Titans franchise) and CBS TV Studios. Written by Eoghan O’Donnell (Teen Wolf) with The Good Wife exec producer Ted Humphrey supervising, The Messengers starts with a mysterious object crashing down to earth. A group of seemingly unconnected strangers die from the energy pulse, but then awaken to learn that they have been deemed responsible for preventing the impending Apocalypse. (A previous description identified the awoken strangers as angels of the coming Apocalypse). Iwanyk executive produces through his Thunder Road Television. Thunder Road’s SVP Film & TV Kent Kubena and Industry Entertainment’s Ava Jamshidi also executive produce, with O’Donnell co-exec producing. The Messengers joins five other CW pilots, comic book adaptations The Flash and iZombie, Supernatural spinoff, thriller Identity and female soap Jane the Virgin.

Mark Romanek, whose credits include One Hour Photo, Never Le Me Go, and the pilot for Locke & Key that got a lot of praise but ended up not going to series, is set to direct the pilot for The Visitors for ABC.

Michael Dinner is set to direct the pilot for Clementine, also for ABC. Dinner is a prolific television director, whose credits include the pilots for Kidnapped, Bionic Woman, Sons of Anarchy, The Beast, and The Mob Doctor.

Preacher has been announced as officially in development at AMC with Sam Catlin (Breaking Bad) on board as showrunner. You can read the full report here.

All this genre stuff is great news, but, can't we get just one Space Opera with Space travel and Aliens and such? All we've got is Doctor Who (British) and Falling Skies (which although it has Aliens, is set on Earth) and Defiance (Also set on Earth, and I couldn't get through more than the first couple episodes)

There are a number of space shows in development. We could get at least a couple within the next year or two. The leading contenders are Halo for Xbox One's TV service, Barbarella for Amazon's TV service, Incursion for Starz and a number of potential shows in development for Syfy.

Part of what sucks in this new TV reality is I'm not going to subscribe to Hulu+, Netflix, Amazon, and now XBox to get 1 or 2 shows that I want to watch on each service.

I'm already paying At&t $135/month for internet service, hd cable + HBO [for Game of Thrones] and have Netflix.

~ $140 a month is more than enough for, "entertainment."

If House of Cards is anything to go by the shows will be released on DVD.

Yea, there's been quite alot in development, for at least the last 5 years, but, none have panned out. Though maybe, with so many on alternative Media sources (IE: Not regular networks), maybe some of these will work out :bolian:

Will you need an XBox to be able to watch the Halo show? Or is there an app?

I think the idea is it will premiere on Xbox and you'll need an Xbox Live subscription to view it, though it may be available on their Xbox Video app to buy/rent.

Sarah Snook Lands The Lead In ABC Drama Pilot ‘Clementine’

Here is the first major discovery of 2014 pilot season. Young Australian actress Sarah Snook has been cast in the title role of ABC’s drama pilot Clementine, from the Mark Gordon Co. and ABC Studios. Written by feature scribe Dean Georgaris, Clementine centers on troubled 28-year-old psychic Clementine Ross (Snook) who sees her life begin to change in unexpected ways when she decides to stop running from her past.

I haven't read the book, but any new space sci-fi series will get my attention.
