Star Trek 3: Classic Trek or original story?

Ugh, there's no point in doing a reboot if you're just going to recycle stories. ST09 was fun because it took classic Trek on a new adventure. ST12 chickened out. It's like Abrams took one step forward, one step back.

^ This. :techman:

I'm conflicted though. I liked STiD, I felt it had a gripping storyline in places, some excellent performances from the entire cast, and a healthy sense of confidence that I thought the 2009 movie lacked. But on the other hand, I absolutely thought they wasted the potential that the 2009 movie set-up. The 2009 movie left me feeling like this was a bold new version of Star Trek that could literally go anywhere, I had a huge sense of anticipation about where the franchise could go next. StiD however just left me feeling like it was running on the spot, unable to move forward. That both movies effectively end with the exact same scene speaks volumes to me.

On the whole I actually *prefer* STiD to the 2009 movie, but I'd be lying if I said that I didn't feel a little disappointed that they wasn't more bold in some of the choices they made.

maybe STID was similar in that respect to Quantum of Solace...by the end you sort of realise Bond was at the same point as at the end of CR.

It would be nice if it were like The Voyage Home in that it didn't feature a villain, per se, but rather presented the crew with a problem that everyone needed to contribute to solving according to their skills. I'm not saying it has to be whales or even time travel, but I think TVH resonates with so many people because of the humor, of course, the novelty of seeing the crew in a modern setting, but even moreso, everyone had a role to play which was pretty much in-line with their character, and everyone got the spotlight for at least a little while.

They needed something to hold the whales, so Scotty got to show off his engineering skills and knowledge (not to mention playing his usual role of being the guy to yell about the problems with the ship. Sulu, the pilot, got to pilot the helicoptor (maybe not the strongest role for him, but I'd argue it gave him more to do than TWoK and TSfS did, character-wise (and, if I recall, originally, the story focused a bit on his ancestry in San Francisco). Chekov, the security officer, got to infiltrate a "nuclear wessel" along with Uhura (who, again, like Sulu didn't get a lot to do, but moreso than some of the previous movies gave her). Of course, McCoy got to save the patient (Chekov), Spock got to be Spock, and well, Kirk, got to be the lead.

I could go with another Guardian of Forever.
You'll have to get past Harlan Ellison first.
Or ask him nicely first, anyway.

And bring money.
Yea, people like to act as if Harlan Ellison is a total ogre and unwilling to work with someone.

He's got no problem (that I'm aware of) with his stuff being adapted, it's his stuffed being used without permission or accredidation he has a problem with, just like any artist

Do you know what? I wouldn't have a problem with that one bit

although it was abit of a fun story now i think about it neither would I..:rommie:

Gorkon/Worf could oppose Chang/kruge.

khan would be full on 'wrath of khan' khan out for revenge

everything more 'ST Movie' looking in regard to the uniforms, sets, ships, mushroom spacedock etc as itd be set 5 years plus after STID

plus plenty off cameos for the 50th:

Bakula/Spiner as Archer/Soong in an 22nd century Augment opening, or library footage that kirk spock check out to help with khan(maybe even on a holodeck sim to These are the Voyages.. fooling the audience type thing) maybe Spiner as the nut who wakes up Khan (as Arik or Noonian Soong)

Stewart as grandfather Picard (see Generations Picard/Troi scene for potential profession)

Nimoy in something more than phoneaSpock duty. returns to his home timeline?

and Shatner in a fanpleasing end cameo as old Pine Kirk (not Prime Kirk) maybe with old Quinto Spock (something like Cloud Atlas)

maybe it be too soon to bring khan back (maybe they could do it in 4)...but that..being..said dont forget B Cumberbatch is becoming quite a big star (the new wave of stars Hiddleson, Hemsworth etc) so maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to use him again for 3 to help the box office (and maybe before he gets too big and expensive )

How about this?

The Enterprise is sent to investigate the explosion of the Veridian star. On the way there they encounter a strange energy ribbon in space. Kirk, Spock, and McCoy take a shuttle to get a closer look and when the shuttle starts to break up, they try to beam out only to be sucked into the Nexus. There they encounter Kirk Prime's "echo" chopping wood, and he tells them about an officer from the future who talked him into leaving the Nexus to apprehend a galactic criminal.

They leave Echo Kirk with his Ktarian eggs. The Big Three then travel to Veridian III, where they witness Picard defeating Soran, and just in the nick of time, save Kirk Prime from being crushed by the bridge.

Contrivances? Sure. Plot holes? Plenty, thanks. But ... "it sounds like fun."

;)

Hmm...or perhaps there is mass planetary destruction on an even larger scale than the previous films. And instead of head crushing, the new villain completely crushes people with some kind of large compacting device. Spock Prime is witnessing all of this. Then Whoopi Goldberg shows up and tells him he's actually still in the prime universe, but none of what he's experienced over the past few years is real. He's in the Nexus. And due to progressing early onset Bendii Syndrome, Spock's nexus is twisted and includes lots of destruction and death. His apparently random romantic involvement with Uhura is something he deep down always wanted. And he's in the Nexus, so there you go. But his extreme emotions due to his condition are telepathically causing the Nexus to expand and cause rips in space/time. So Admiral Chekov (Prime) is sent to the Nexus to investigate what's causing the massive rip in space/time, and then he finds Spock Prime and brings him out of the Nexus (after fighting off the body crushing villain).

Time for Shatner to say good-bye to Star Trek: we don't need any more cameos from the original cast.

Well, you're no daisy. You're no daisy at all.

^Good. Everybody wants to move ahead, then let's move ahead., and not back. My plot idea's just the thing to do so.

The Star Trek Reboot is based on the very strong roots. It's strongly connected with primary characters from TOS.
J.J. Abrams brings old Spock to the new movie. Why? For what? Is Abrams stupid?
Original characters are still valuable and they still can fix some errors of previous movies (here I mean ST:Generations). At least, they can attract old fans to Reboot-movies.

Yeesh, you'd think the smiley face at the end of urbandefault's last two posts would tell you that they're made in jest.

I always thought Soran had the potential to be a great villain. Or tragic hero, if you like. And then factor in how you could explore what made him a refugee in the first place... If you no longer have to observe canon, then I guess you can have an even faster Enterprise on the scene when El Auria falls. A recast Soran comes up with his plan to lure those who perpetrated the destruction of his race, into the path of the Nexus ribbon. It's simply a means of getting revenge on a few Borg cubes... A destructive force of nature he plans to put to good use. Nobody over there is aware it's also an entrance to a pocket universe and potential exit to multiple others. With a fleet decimated defending the Federation from Borg invasion, Soran gets a desperate Kirk & his crew involved in this Nexus scheme... only somewhere along the way, they accidentally wind up inside it. Which is where your Shatner, McDowell, even Stewart and Goldberg cameos could all conceivably happen.
