Gotta admit the designs are growing on me. What worries me more though is the combination of Michael Bay and Ehren Kruger (and yes, I know Bay isn't directing).

And I thought my interest couldn't get any lower. Silly me! I wonder what I'll spend my $20 on instead...

Well, I had no intention of spending money on this movie anyway (and never have had a movie cost me $20), but I don't see anything outrageous about these designs that make me feel like they are a slap in the face. They're minor changes from what I'm used to. Given that what I'm used to was a massive change from the original comic, I recognize that I don't have a monopoly on what TMNT must be as long as the core elements are preserved (for awhile, it looked like they wouldn't be, but things appear better now).

I'm not saying things shouldn't ever change. I just hate the new designs. It happens.

Is this being shot for IMAX 3-D?? Didn't think it was.
I figure that was your ballpark dollar amount.
    Here those films are $17.
A typical evening price for a 2-D film at Carmike or Regal Cinemas is $11-12.

For me, it's not any one single element that's offputting. I just find the designs on the whole to be lacking in any aesthetic appeal.

They aren't pleasant to look at. It's like you can argue that all the trees are there, but the forest doesn't look right.

I guess, to be honest, do you really think a giant, man-sized, anthropomorphic turtle would be "pleasant to look at." I kind of like the designs though I don't get some of the choices like giving them pants. (?!)

Definitely not the kind of design I would go with if it were up to me, but they're not the total disasters I was expecting.

The 1990 version is easier on my eyes, so in answer to your question, relatively speaking, yeah I do, Trekker.

Well, the 1990s versions were easier on the eyes but seemed to be going more for the cartoon's look more than anything else. This movie seem to want to go for a more "realistic" look of what a giant anthropomorphic turtle would look like and I think this kind of fits. I like the look of them, again some the "clothing"/dressing choices are odd routes to go but overall they don't look too bad. Though I still also sort of question (based on some on-set stand ins) the turtles being taller than April/humans. I believe the turtles were supposed to be fairly stout being not only teenagers but, well, turtles.

Right, exactly. And in attempting to do just that, me, I think it appears to be going right into its own kind of uncanny valley.*

    * - The so-called uncanny valley strictly speaking applies only to CGI people, as I learned it, but I think something similar may be operating here.

Yeah. I don't like the nostrils and I'm ambivalent about their sort of hulking look. But this could have been far, far worse. I'm giving credit for at least being relatively close.

They look odd, and mean. It's like Shrek and Godzilla 1998 had a baby.

Great. Now I won't be able to look at the new Turtles without thinking of Warriors of Virtue. Thanks a lot. :scream:

Seriously though, the new design really doesn't look bad at all. I was expecting something much more divergent from the traditional look.
