90's Music

^That song really represents that time period to me. It's the first music video that I ever saw on MTV (our family had just got the channel).

Adding two of my favourite Canadian contributions:

The mid-90's New Country was probably the best of the decade, but it hardly compared to anything from the 80's or earlier. Spears I found couldn't sing a note to save her life, and she really introduced the era of "sound-alike" singers, since after her, even through to now, the different pop singers just don't have enough of a different sound in order to tell them apart or stand out from one another.

I have to say, I think my favorite period for 90s music was the early-to-mid part. It was a kind of still in a transition phase from the 80s Synth era, but the acid house/rave culture was pretty much my scene.

Things took a turn around 1998/1999/2000 which I reacted negatively against. That whole Britney/Cristina era.

Never much of a fan of Destiny's Child either, all truth being told.

Britney/Christina as the lackluster pop stars, the genesis of Nu-Metal, lots of super boring strummy acoustic chordy songs, Sugar Ray, Backstreet Boys... Yeah for me at some point the 90s just fell off a cliff.

^ I liked Nu Metal until clones of bands that debuted in the early-mid 90's saturated radio in the late 90's and then a few good Nu Metal bands became somewhat popular in the eary 00's. '

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nu_metal

Listed as examples on wiki; Korn, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Staind, Deftones, Disturbed, and Slipknot. I would say Linkin Park and Disturbed are my least favs...I liked Limp Bizkit's debut album and after that it goes down hill fast. LOL.

This is an example of good and popular 90's metal...

Not only couldn't she sing, her interview that I read in the Tower Records house magazine Pulse showed how shallow she was.

More Spirit of the West...

That's a nice selection, Richard. One other song I like of theirs is 'And if Venice is Sinking'.

And again with Great Big Sea, but this song is one I often consider to be my theme song:

Bowery Electric - Freedom Fighter

...this was released in 2000, but I think it qualifies ;-)

Bowery Electric - Freedom Fighter

I love the lyrics, and the drone-y shoe-gazer style ;-)

Lyrics to Freedom Fighter

[Sample: No more war! No more war! No more war!]

We hold these things to be true
Like a flock of sparrows flying over you
We plot and we plan
Burning oil like the world won't end
Like the world won't end

Another day, another world war
Find out walking through the grocery store
Watching bombs through the TV eye
Light it up like the Fourth of July
Like the Fourth of July

God's on both sides
But I don't break it when the bombs start flying
I know it's just a symbol to you
You, you come on like a freedom fighter
You come on like a freedom fighter

Another gift from a far off friend
Coming at you from over the sand
That's what the bellicose do
We try to reach the human in you
The human in you

God's on both sides
Thank God we make them try
Don't wake when the camera's on you
You, you'll go out like a freedom fighter
You're gone like a freedom fighter

You'll go out like a freedom fighter
You'll go out like a freedom fighter
You'll go out like a freedom fighter
