My pleasure. I always love those production videos. The music of particular interest to me. I do wonder, since Howard Shore left the orchestration to someone else (Conrad Pope), how much of an effect that had on how Shore's compositions were translated into the music we hear on film (and the soundtrack). I'm not versed well enough to know for sure, but perhaps this is why the score feels less recognizable to some - despite the fact that it is filled with at least as much thematic material as every other Shore/Middle Earth score?

No big difference. Shore just delegated the workload, but he's still the one saying “I like it this way, I don't like it that way.“

There was a scene where Oakenshield and gang run into the bodies of dead Dwarves who were trapped in the lonely mountains. It is said that Tolkien based the Dwarves on the Jews , like the way he based the Hobbits on English rural folks. Peter Jackson knowing that, probably included that scene so that it would remind us of the Shoah, provided you knew about Tolkien's inspiration behind creating the Dwarf race of Middle Earth.

That must have not made the published edition of The Hobbit. Least it's not in my copy.

In the book, Thorin and Company never even meet Smaug. He leaves to attack Laketown while they wait for Bilbo.

I have to say, the change where they fight him and try to kill him...actually kind of improved it for me. Giving Smaug more reason to destroy Laketown and making Thorin and co more responsible for what happens to them.

The book was published in 1937. I could be wrong but i don't think it contains that scene with the dead trapped Dwarves. Peter Jackson or the other writers probably wrote the scene to invoke reminders of the Shoah of the 1940s.

Before this movie came out I never thought of it before, but it is absolutely ridiculous in the book that Thorin goes on a quest to kill the dragon... and never actually meets him!

And no one is in the room to hear "Rosebud" either.

Shit happens.
Can you just imagine the amount of dragon guano there is in The Lonely Mountain?

The word is "guano" right for a dragon, isn't it? Certainly seems right. If it isn't, it should be.

Depends how slow a dragons digestive transit is, especially if it sleeps for years at a time.

Re: The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug - Grading & Discussion (Spoile

Maybe the dragon shits gold coins...that would explain the size of the stash.

Re: The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug - Grading & Discussion (Spoile

Probably what any dragon does. Roast up a field of sheep, eat them, sleep, crap them right back out in the same field.

I'm sure dragons don't so much poop as fire-fart, instantly burning any waste so as not to leave any mess.
