Moffat Penned Episodes - Yay or Nay

What's funny is that Mark Gatiss, the man a lot of fans are pushing as new showrunner, has written much bigger clunkers than Moffat. IMO of course.

Some were better than others, but the only one I really didn't like was The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe. But even then it had good bits. Loved the one-shot companion, and the ending managed to raise a tear. The main plot was just a waste though.

They are? That would be cool, although all I think of when I think of Gatiss' writing is Victory of the Daleks, which wasn't his finest hour.

Lets not forget Night Terrors. Though he did redeem himself this season.

Maybe it's a Gallifrey Base thing, but whenever the weekly "Who should be the new showrunner?" thread turns up over there, Mark's name is usually one of the first mentioned.

Ugh, I could not stand VoD with its instant space planes, defused bomb with love, and standing around chatting too much in the ugly Dalek ship. Just didn't like it!

.

Night Terrors was shit, but I've enjoyed all his other ones, even Victory Of The Daleks
I beg to differ. Night Terrors is merely OK, but Victory of the Daleks and, especially, The Crimson Horror, are terrible. The latter might be one of the worst DW stories, ever.

In your opinion. Personally The Crimson Horror might be the best thing Gatiss has ever written for Who. I loved it to bits. Night Terrors on the other hand...

No, definitely wouldn't want Gatiss as showrunner. Much as I loved his Sherlock S3 premiere, his stories for DW never seem nearly as inspired or well-written as Moffat's or RTD's for some reason. Even when they do have a decent idea behind them.

TBH I think the BBC are either grooming Brian Minchin to take over - he has exec-produced Torchwood, SJA and Dirk Gently - or setting the stage for Toby Whithouse to do so (since Minchin exec-produced Being Human with him.)

He's the favorite of the Gallifrey Base crowd, certainly.

The thing about Gatiss is that I'm not sure he'd want to give up all of the other things he does (like acting and working on other projects) to focus on producing Doctor Who. I'm not saying he would turn it down if offered because he might well say yes, but he'd certainly have a long dark teatime of the soul as he wrestled with it.

I agree with Lonemagpie, by the way. Minchin is probably the frontrunner to replace Moffat now. He's certainly London's man in Cardiff.

I just don't see it. Maybe I'm blinded by the last eight seasons, but making a non-writer/producer the showrunner seems odd.

Well, this is why I say it makes Toby Whithouse more likely than Mark Gatiss.

However, Minchin also used to be script editor on Torchwood and SJA...

I forgot about that. He also wrote one a Doctor Who novel and a Torchwood audio story.

I still think it's more likely to be someone who has experience as a scriptwriter (especially Doctor Who experience, but per IMDB Minchin doesn't have any), but it took Helen Raynor several years before she got a script commission, so maybe Minchin will be getting one soon. :)

I haven't seen the first two Moffat Christmas specials so I can't comment on those. I've liked all his other episodes to varying degrees and definitely wouldn't give a down vote to any.
