So am I to assume from "The Naked Now"...

Yes. Also, Data later made a deal with Armus because of what happened in this episode, and that's why it killed Yar: Data had knocked her up.

In before the lock!

It seems like a perfectly valid thread to me.

I think the writers set out to show that Riker was such a hero that he was immune. But if that was the case, surely Beverly would have wanted to study his antigens or whatever. So yes, it comes across that Riker's default setting is indeed, "drunk".

Different people react to alcohol in different ways. I think it'd be funny if Deanna got really surly and aggressive

Riker can obviously handle his alcohol.

Riker just knows how to hold his liquor.

Riker: "Bloodwine is better."
Worf: "I know, right?"

I've been wondering this for a long time. Everyone else is affected, including Data, except Riker, with no explanation. We know he's infected, because, aside from the sound effect the disease mysteriously has, he infects Crusher.

If there's one thing we've learned from The Naked Now it's that either McCoy was incompetent at record-keeping or Crusher is incompetent at Google.

Jonathan Frakes has gone on saying that he's "totally ashamed" of this episode, which quite honestly surprises me. Even though the episode is genuinely bad, it did wonders for Riker's character. Throughout the entire episode, Riker comes off as one of only two characters who actually knows how to handle a critical situation, especially when faced with a crew spiraling out of control. He shows great command authority and competence even after he's been infected with the virus. This is one of the better Riker episodes.

If I remember well, once Mary-Stu Riker found the logs, Crusher reproduced the McCoy's formula, but it was not effective because the virus had mutated. This lesson is more appropriate for Home Soil where it seems that the whole community of Federation's biologists failed to update its basic concept of life forms after Kirk had met a lot of unusual creatures.

No, Riker was affected, but the symptoms appeared very lately and were milder, as he had a strong resistance to alcohol because he's heavier or more used to drink.

I think it's more funny that Wesley's inclinations when "drunk" is to commandeer the ship and appoint himself captain.

I *think* this episode also had the computer displaying both the wrong TOS Enterprise (it showed the refit) AND it reversed the nacelles, too, at least in the original non-bluray version. Maybe the computer got infected the same way as Data?

I would think Brent Spiner would have the better reason for being "totally ashamed" of this episode. I never bought the "prick me, do I not bleed" rationale for Data being infected.

As for Doctor McCoy being bad at record keeping/Crusher being bad at Google, I'll give you the latter, partially, but not the former. The episode made it clear this infection had the same effect on the body, but the cause and therefore the cure was different.

As for the Google, it did seem to take the crew longer than it should have to Google the circumstances of "The Naked Time." Though, I do wonder what results they got from "fully clothed shower." Google that yourself, and I'm sure you'll come across some interesting results!

I also bristle at the "download" the data to sickbay line. It just rubs me wrong for some reason. I keep wondering what my 1987 self thought about that line, since "download" wasn't really a part of the vernacular at the time.

It's worth noting at this juncture that in the Dorothy Fontana draft of The Naked Now", Riker was going to have been more visibly affected by the virus. It was going to bring to the fore all of his feelings of conflict between wanting to sweep Deanna off her feet and marry her, and needing to keep her at a professional distance because she's an officer under his command. A kind of variation of how the virus affected Kirk in the original show.

To be honest I kind of like that the virus doesn't seem to affect Will as much as everyone else -- it shows his fortitude in a crisis, and I also like think that the way he just takes Deanna to sickbay and doesn't take advantage of her condition (despite her literally throwing herself at him) says a lot of good things about him too. :techman:
